SC Safe Home grants provide up to $5,000 for wind and hurricane mitigation upgrades including roof reinforcement, hurricane straps, impact-resistant doors, and flood openings. Applications are submitted through the SC Department of Insurance. Eligibility is income-based — households at or below 80% of area median income qualify. Charleston County homeowners may also qualify for related flood mitigation programs. Apply early — funding is limited each cycle.

(3) Check reviews on Angi, Yelp, and the BBB SC chapter (bbb.org/us/sc) — look for patterns. (4) Get 3 written quotes for any job over $1,000 — price variance in Charleston can be 30%+. Never pay more than 30-40% upfront.
