Charleston Welcomes New Children's Book Highlighting Its Unique History and Charm

Charleston’s Bright New Addition to Children’s Literature

Charleston, South Carolina is in for a delightful surprise! The vibrant city has welcomed a new children’s book that not only captures its history but also brings its unique charm to life for young readers. Author Dawn Burns, who has deep local roots, has released a gem titled This is Charleston. Since its publication in December 2023, it has quickly become a beloved treasure for both kids and adults alike.

From Nashville to the Holy City

Now, let’s get a bit personal here! Dawn is not just any author; she’s a dedicated elementary and preschool teacher who has lived in various places, including Nashville, where she created her first book, This is Nashville, three years ago. Her journey took her on a ride from her childhood in Greenville to the stunning coastal surroundings of Charleston, where she currently resides in Mount Pleasant.

Reflecting on her adventures, Burns explains, “Charleston is a beautiful place to visit; it’s a beautiful place to live.” She points out all the lovely beaches, delicious food options, and most importantly, the fantastic history that the area has to offer.

Art Meets History in a Kid-Friendly Way

The 35-page book is anything but your average history lesson. It’s filled with stunning illustrations by artist Candler Reynolds, showcasing the picturesque streets of Rainbow Row and other iconic sites. Burns made sure to present Charleston’s storied past in a fun, colorful way that can capture the imaginations of youngsters. “I wanted to make it as inviting as possible to young, curious minds,” she said.

Readers will find themselves enchanted by the sights of Charleston’s horse-drawn carriage rides, cobblestone streets and even venues like the Dock Street Theater. The book serves as both a visual delight and a gentle guide for those kids excited to learn about their surroundings.

A Community and Connection

Burns highlights how well the books are being received, sharing a sweet story about an enthusiastic reader, “I have one lady, she sent me a picture the other day; she said her child picked out the book and wanted to read that specific one.” It’s clear that this book is not only educational but also a way for families to bond over bedtime stories.

As someone who also manages a website called The Nashville Mom, Dawn’s plate is pretty full! Yet, she prioritizes her teaching role and actively nurtures her passion for writing children’s books.

The Changing Face of Charleston

While casting her gaze on the changing landscape of her beloved Charleston, Burns noted, “We have had a lot of people moving in from all over the place.” She feels that this influx has added a refreshing diversity to the area while maintaining the warm hospitality that Charleston is known for. “I think the people are genuinely happy to be here.”

With This is Charleston, Burns not only hopes to inspire kids about the city’s beautiful culture but also envisions future books that explore her other cherished locations. In her words, “One thing we love about being back is that we can get outside more here.” After years of chilly, wet winters in Nashville, Charleston’s warm weather feels like a treat!
