CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston and Wofford will head into Sunday’s game even in the series after the Terriers hung on to a tight 3-2 win. The visitors scored three runs off Charleston starter Aidan Hunter in the first four innings to take the lead. The Cougars fought back to make it a 3-2 game in the 8th but were unable to tie it up against Wofford’s Camden Wicker out of the bullpen.
Wofford starting pitcher Zac Cowan began the game strong, retiring the first seven Charleston hitters. Wofford’s bats gave Cowan a healthy lead when a pair of RBI gound-outs in the 4th made it 3-0. After allowing his first hit in the 3rd, Cowan settled back in to keep the Cougars off the board until a two-out RBI single by Trotter Harlan in the 6th inning to make it a 3-1 game.
Charleston brought in freshman Hayden Thomas to pitch in relief in the 6th inning. Thomas worked 2.1 innings of scoreless work before handing over to Emmett Bice in the 8th. Bice kept Wofford off the board the rest of the way over 1.2 innings pitched.
The Terriers turned to Camden Wicker out of the bullpen in the 7th inning. Trotter Harlan made it a one-run game in the 8th inning with a sac-fly off of Wicker but the Cougars could not bring in the tying run from second. Charleston would get a runner on in the 9th but could not bring him home as Wicker picked up the save to even the weekend series.
Trotter Harlan went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and walks. Will Baumhofer had a hit and a run scored. Cole Mathis, Dariyan Pendergrass, and Luke Wood each added a hit.
The series finale between these two begins at 1:00 p.m. with the first 250 fans receiving a “Luck of the Cougs” pint glass in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.
