Sponsor Our ArticlesCharleston is recovering from a cold snap that led to school delays and closures. The Charleston County School District announced a two-hour delay, with eLearning set to begin midweek. Local parks and libraries are also adjusting their schedules due to icy conditions. Additionally, the Charleston Half Marathon has been canceled amid winter storm warnings. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous travel as conditions worsen through Wednesday, while community services like trash collection remain operational.
Charleston is waking up after a chilly spell that had many students and parents staying snug at home last week. Monday marked the first day back in the classroom for students and educators in the Lowcountry, yet the remnants of last week’s winter weather are still making their presence felt. Several schools and local agencies are facing delays and partial closures as they deal with icy conditions lingering from the recent storm.
To kick things off on a brighter note, the Charleston County School District announced a two-hour delay for students returning on Monday. While students hit the snooze button a couple of extra times, all school administrators and staff are expected to show up as usual. However, looking ahead, things are going to change again! Tuesday brings a two-hour early dismissal, and schools are closed through Wednesday due to forecasted snow and freezing rain. Things will transition to eLearning on Wednesday to keep those learning wheels turning and ensure safety. Parents, make sure to check-in with your school for instructions on a smooth eLearning experience.
If your little ones or you need help navigating the eLearning setup, the district’s IT Help Desk is just a phone call away at (843) 308-8181.
As for the parks, it seems like they’re a bit sluggish too! Palmetto Island County Park managed to swing its gates open at noon, offering limited amenities for those adventurous enough to brave the cold. Meanwhile, the Mount Pleasant Pier cafe and shop followed suit, though the pier itself is still on ice until things warm up a bit.
The Outdoor Zone at James Island County Park is another story, remaining closed until Tuesday. Sadly, the Baxter-Patrick James Island, Johns Island, and Edisto library branches are out for the count too; all closed on Monday. Thankfully, the Main and John L. Dart Branches opened at noon, and the rest of the libraries are back to their normal schedules.
In unfortunate news, the much-anticipated Charleston Half Marathon has been canceled with no rescheduled date currently on the calendar. We know many were looking forward to it—such a bummer!
Keeping an eye on the weather, the National Weather Service has put out a winter storm watch and cold weather advisory lasting through Wednesday afternoon. Those looking for warmer days will have to bundle up. With high temperatures in the 30s and lows dipping into the 20s (with wind chills that could feel even colder), it’s time to keep that winter gear handy. There’s a real risk for frostbite and hypothermia for anyone who braves the outdoors without proper protection.
Residents of Charleston should prepare for some tough travel conditions starting Tuesday evening, especially on bridges and overpasses. Forecasts predict snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches, potentially more in areas north of Summerville. Best to stay off the roads if you can during this chilly weather.
Mark your calendars: the Charleston County offices will be closing at 4 p.m. Tuesday, along with all public library branches. The City of Charleston offices will be closing at 3 p.m. Tuesday and remain closed through Wednesday, with public meetings being rescheduled for a later time.
On a positive note, trash collection is set to go on as planned for Tuesday, but services will be paused on Wednesday, resuming Thursday. And if you’re thinking about recycling, curbside collection will also continue as scheduled today and Tuesday, with possible changes later in the week.
Finally, it’s important to note that the South Carolina House District 113 Special Primary Election will proceed as planned, with polling locations and hours staying the same. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
So there you have it, folks! Stay bundled up, keep an eye on the weather, and prepare for a few extra cozy days ahead in Charleston!
