Charleston Announces Inclusive Voting Measures for Neurodivergent Voters in Fall 2024 Elections

Exciting News for Voters in Charleston!

Charleston, SC has some fabulous news for voters this upcoming Fall 2024 election season! The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) has announced an extended partnership with Just Bee, a community-driven organization focused on inclusivity. This collaboration aims to create a more accessible voting experience specifically designed for our neurodivergent friends and family members.

Building on Success

After a successful venture during the primaries, the BVRE and Just Bee are continuing their mission to ensure that the voting process caters to everyone, including those who may find traditional polling places overwhelming. This is such a huge step forward in recognizing the special needs of the neurodivergent community in Charleston, making sure that all residents can participate in the democratic process.

Enhanced Voting Experience

So, what can you expect this November? Let’s dive in!

  • Specialized Training: All early voting managers will complete specialized training to learn how best to support neurodivergent voters. This includes understanding sensory needs and communication styles to help make the voting experience as comfortable as possible.
  • Sensory Kits: Every early voting center will provide sensory kits from Just Bee, stocked with items designed to help individuals cope with sensory overload. These kits consist of fidget tools, noise-canceling headphones, and other calming items.
  • Bee Hive Sensory Safe Zone: For voters who may still feel overwhelmed, the Bee Hive mobile sensory safe space will be available at select locations. This quiet area is designed to help individuals step away from the hustle and bustle of the polling place and regroup before casting their ballot.
