Charleston Honors Veterans Day with Community Events and Celebrations

Charleston Celebrates Veterans Day with Heartfelt Events

This Monday, Charleston, S.C. is preparing to roll out the red carpet for our veterans, with a series of special events scheduled to honor those who have bravely served in the armed forces. Our community will come together to show gratitude and provide some well-deserved recognition to both veterans and active-duty military personnel.

A Special Breakfast for Heroes

Kickstarting the day, Trident Medical Center is hosting a delightful breakfast event for veterans from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. This gathering, taking place at 9330 Medical Plaza Drive in North Charleston, is a wonderful opportunity for veterans to enjoy a meal together and connect with others who share similar experiences. It’ll be a great way to start the day off right while feeling appreciated!

Parade of Honor in Beaufort County

If you’re looking for an exciting way to celebrate, head over to Beaufort County for their spectacular Veterans Day Parade at 10 a.m. The parade kicks off at the historic Beaufort National Cemetery, and this year, we’re proud to have retired Marines Sgts. Maj. James and Gwendolyn Moore serving as the grand marshals. This event is sure to be filled with pride, honor, and plenty of community spirit!

Goose Creek’s Heartfelt Program

For those in the Goose Creek area, don’t miss the Veterans Day program taking place at 11 a.m. at John McCants Veterans Park, located at 355 Anita Drive. The program will feature military veterans and city council members Hannah Cox, Melissa Enos-Sims, and Gayla McSwain, who will share a special keynote address. This is a chance to hear from those who have walked the walk, and they promise to deliver feelings of unity and remembrance!

Free Family Fun at Patriots Point

Don’t forget to take advantage of the free admission being offered at the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant. On Monday, veterans, active-duty personnel, and their families can explore the museum’s treasures at no cost. What better way to pay tribute to our heroes than by immersing oneself in the history of our naval forces?

Ride Free, Honor Free

For veterans needing to get around town on this special day, the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority is offering free rides! Just show a military ID, service photo, or even a veteran’s cap to board the CARTA buses without charge. It’s a convenient way for veterans and active military members to participate in all the day’s festivities.

Understanding Veterans Day

It’s important to understand the significance of this holiday, which is celebrated every Nov. 11. This date marks the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended hostilities in World War I, effective at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918. Originally called Armistice Day, the name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all veterans. Remember, this day is distinct from Memorial Day, which pays tribute to those who have died in service to our country.

Check Local Services

While most local government offices and banks will be closed, it’s best to check their official websites to find out about any changes to trash and recycling collections. On the flip side, many retailers and restaurants will be open and ready to serve, with some even offering special deals to veterans. It’s a day of appreciation all around!

So, mark your calendar and get ready to celebrate our veterans in Charleston. Whether you’re attending a parade, grabbing breakfast with a fellow service member, or soaking up some history at a museum, this Veterans Day promises to be meaningful and full of community spirit. Let’s come together to thank those who have made sacrifices for our freedom!
