An assassination attempt on a former president is an alarming incident that has shocked the nation. Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, faced such a horrifying incident at a rally in Western Pennsylvania on Saturday. The assailant, who was found dead near an AR-15-style rifle was identified as the one behind this shocking event.
This brutal incident brings into light once again the notorious AR-15-style weapon. The AR-15 — marked as an exceptionally lethal weapon capable of releasing several rounds at breakneck speeds, has been behind several recent mass shootings, resulting in fatal casualties. This deadly firearm has wreaked havoc in various parts of the country including Uvalde, Texas; Buffalo, New York; Dayton, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Parkland, Florida; and Orlando, Florida.
With the string of mass shootings using AR-15 style weapons, gun control advocates are revisiting the Federal Assault Weapons ban enacted in 1994 during the Democratic President Bill Clinton’s tenure. The regulation, which received help from Congressional Democrats and a small but significant block of Republican lawmakers, and lasted 10 years, succeeded in barring specified types of semi-automatic weapons, including the lethal Colt AR-15 along with high-capacity magazines. Despite a tremendous potential to diminish gun violence incidents, the ban eventually expired, un-renewed after 2004. It’s noted that, currently, apostles of gun control laws have prioritized re-introducing a similar weapon ban. Surveys reveal that around 61 percent Americans endorse the restriction of weapons that are commonly termed as assault rifles.
However, amid the growing concerns post the assassination attempt on Trump, the modern-day Republicans don’t seem eager to initiate an action that could prevent people from acquiring such guns. Even in the scenario of an assassination attempt on a former president, there is skepticism over the likelihood of Republicans discussing this sensitive issue at all. Blame is primarily being assigned to the Democrats for inciting such violence with their rhetoric. As a result, the GOP’s silence over the issue of gun control becomes all the more obvious and alarming.
However, this has not always been the case. In the past, Republicans have actively participated in passing notable gun safety legislation. A fine example of this is the aftermath of an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981, which led to substantial gun safety legislation in American history, largely due to the active involvement of a powerful faction of Republicans. Post the attack on Reagan, James Brady, Reagan’s press secretary who suffered severe brain damage from a gunshot wound, alongside his wife Sarah, championed for the Brady Bill requiring background checks on prospective gun buyers.
Nevertheless, the relentless episodes of gun violence across the country underline the urgency of stricter gun control laws. As shown by the shootings carried out on leaders from both parties, the possibility of becoming a victim is not one-sided. It is critical for both parties to realize the omnipresent vulnerability to gun violence. It’s a dark irony that while one party openly discusses the dangers posed by firearms, the other prefers to not directly address the lethal potential of these weapons. Changes in gun control laws can only happen if the partisan deadlock is shattered. The recent incidents are stark reminders that all, including a former president, are at risk in the face of resistant legislative control around weapons.
