Tropical System Could Bring Heavy Rain to Charleston

Tropical System Could Bring Heavy Rain to Charleston

A tropical wave tracking over Cuba is expected to develop into a tropical depression as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico and nears the Florida coast over the weekend. According to the National Hurricane Center, the system is presently generating a large area of poorly organized showers and thunderstorms over eastern Cuba, Hispaniola, the southeastern Bahamas, and Jamaica.

Possible Development of Tropical Depression

The tropical wave is anticipated to emerge over the Straits of Florida late Friday or early Saturday, and further development could occur at this stage. Meteorological data suggests that a tropical depression is likely to form at this time. Current projections show the tropical system moving across Florida before entering the Atlantic Ocean. The system could be off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina by late Monday afternoon.

Impact on Charleston and Lowcountry Area

While the bulk of the heavy rain is predicted to remain over the Gulf Stream and extend up into eastern North Carolina, the Charleston area and other parts of the Lowcountry could experience moderate to heavy rainfall. “Three to five inches is roughly what we’re anticipating as a potential rain total,” stated HERE News meteorologist.

This figure could undergo adjustments based on changes in the system’s intensity, track, and size over the next several days. Current forecasts do not anticipate major wind problems, but this prediction may change depending on the system’s development.

Uncertainties Due to Lack of Circulation Center

Predicted impacts remain somewhat uncertain at this time, largely due to the lack of a formed center of circulation. Storm size, strength, and forward motion will all play roles in determining the magnitude of the impacts. Further eastward movement of the system would likely result in less rain and fewer impacts, while a track farther to the west would likely result in greater rainfall and more substantial impacts.

Despite these uncertainties, local residents are encouraged to regularly check for updates and take necessary precautions. This is especially advised for those residing in flood-prone regions who might be more exposed to this potential threat early next week.

Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings

Moving ahead, tropical storm watches and warnings have already been issued along the west coast of Florida. Residents in Charleston and the Lowcountry area should continue to monitor the situation for further developments and guidance from local weather authorities.

Although much could change with the forecast in coming days, residents are advised to be prepared. “This is not something that should ruin your weekend but it would be wise to keep an eye on the forecast, especially if you are in flood-prone areas,” stated the HERE News meteorologist.
