Weather Woes in Charleston: School Districts Adjust to Tropical Storm Helene

Tropical Storm Warnings in Effect

A large number of local counties, including Allendale, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Hampton, Jasper, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg are currently under a tropical storm warning. Moreover, after-school activities and care programs are getting canceled early today at 6 p.m. Just a heads up, all schools and district offices will be closed tomorrow, giving everyone a chance to stay safe as the storm rolls in.

Charleston County School District

Next up is the Charleston County School District, which is also following suit with an eLearning day on Friday. Their schools and district buildings will be closed. If you have plans for extracurricular activities, you’ll want to note that all <-Kaleidoscope-> and after-school programs scheduled for tomorrow are canceled. Good news for the sports fans, though: Friday night high school athletic games will still be held as planned!

Dorchester Districts

In the Dorchester District 2, students will also be having an eLearning day on Friday, after canceling all after-school programs and activities for today. Meanwhile, Dorchester District 4 has canceled all after-school activities for Thursday, too, and is set to move to eLearning on Friday. The decisions were made considering the forecast for overnight rain combined with sustained winds and possible gusts in the early morning.

Beaufort and Colleton Counties

The Beaufort County School District is taking similar precautions by organizing an eLearning day and a remote workday on Friday, provided that electrical and internet services remain stable. All after-school activities are canceled for Thursday and Friday.

Meanwhile, the Colleton County School District made the jump to an eLearning day starting Friday morning, ensuring that students can continue their studies even as the wind and rain pick up.

Georgetown and Orangeburg Counties

Moving over to the Georgetown County School District, they are planning to transition into an eLearning day for Friday, with all athletic events canceled. Similarly, the Orangeburg County Schools have canceled all after-school activities today and will also follow through with an eLearning day for Friday.

Williamsburg County

Lastly, the Williamsburg County schools have opted to cancel school entirely for the day. It looks like it’ll be a cozy day indoors!
