Hey Savannah residents! 🌧️ Are you ready for some wild weather? The National Weather Service (NWS) has just issued an updated report that might make you want to grab an umbrella and hunker down. As of 4:48 p.m. today, the NWS is warning us of strong thunderstorms raging through our area until 5 p.m. This storm isn’t just a light sprinkle, folks—it’s bringing along penny-sized hail and gusty winds that could pack a punch!
Listen up, Coastal Chatham and Coastal Jasper, along with our friends in Beaufort County. This storm is expected to kick up some serious wind gusts of up to 50 mph. Talk about a breezy ride! Just to put things in perspective, at 4:48 p.m., Doppler radar spotted a strong thunderstorm near Whitemarsh Island, and it’s moving east at a brisk 35 mph. So, don’t wait around too long to prepare!
The alert is targeting some popular spots in our beautiful region, including:
Heads up: gusty winds like these could knock down tree limbs or send unsecured objects sailing. Minor damage to outdoor items is definitely a possibility. So make sure to keep an eye on your patio furniture and flower pots, folks!
With lightning striking the United States 25 million times annually, it’s no wonder storms like these can be a little scary. Most of those strikes happen during the summer months and, sadly, lightning claims about 20 lives each year. When a thunderstorm moves in closer, the likelihood of lightning hits increases, peaking right when the storm is right over your head. So, what’s the game plan? If you can’t find shelter indoors, staying safe is a top priority!
As if storms weren’t bad enough on their own, let’s also talk about driving during all this weather. Ever heard of hydroplaning? It’s when your car slides uncontrollably on wet roads, caused by water buildup in front of your tires. The tires rise onto a layer of water, making it super slippery and leading to a loss of control. Yikes!
In case you do find yourself hydroplaning, here’s what you need to know:
Your safety matters, especially during these stormy conditions. Make sure to stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your local weather updates to keep yourself informed.
So there you have it, Savannah! Stay safe, be weather-aware, and keep those storm supplies handy. Whether you’re chilling at home, on Hilton Head, or catching some rays on Tybee Island, let’s all ride out this storm together. You’ve got this! ☔
