With approximately 3,700 teachers on staff, the district currently reports only about 25 teacher vacancies. Proactive Measures Taken by CCSD

The Charleston County School District’s low vacancy numbers are attributed to proactive measures initiated by district leadership. In a significant move, the district increased teacher salaries by $8,000, making it the highest-paying district in South Carolina. Bill Briggman, the Chief Human Resources Officer of CCSD, notes that the raise is a direct response to rising living costs, which often do not coincide with teacher salaries.

Briggman expresses the impact of the salary increase, stating that it has encouraged many teachers to postpone retirement or even return to teaching after retiring. He emphasizes the necessity for continuous salary enhancements, aiming for starting teacher salaries to reach $60,000. “Retaining our teachers is vital for our students,” he states. “Keeping a consistent teacher force benefits our young people, as they thrive in stable learning environments.”

Changes to Recruitment Practices

In addition to salary increases, CCSD has revamped its recruitment processes since 2018 to more effectively attract talent in the face of impending staffing challenges. This strategy includes offering alternative routes for recent graduates who may not yet be certified, thereby facilitating pathways into teaching. Briggman has observed significant improvements in staffing levels within the last two years.

Continually seeking to fill existing vacancies and prepare for future needs, CCSD plans to host a virtual hiring event on Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m..
