In a dazzling showcase of talent and hard work, Taryn Barbot has made history by earning the program’s first-ever CAA Player of the Year award at Charleston. This remarkable achievement reflects not only her dedication but also sets a new standard for the Cougars’ women’s basketball program. With impressive stats, including an average of 16.6 points per game, it’s no wonder she was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year!
Taryn has dazzled fans and opponents alike this season, leading the Cougars with nine games where she scored over 20 points. Among those, she had an astounding four games where she scored more than 30 points! But that’s not all; she also earned a spot on the prestigious All-CAA First Team and the All-CAA Defensive Team, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court. Taryn’s journey started last year when she was recognized as the CAA Rookie of the Year, and it seems like she is just getting started.
But the Barbot family didn’t stop there. Taylor Barbot, Taryn’s sister, also shone brightly during the awards ceremony! Taylor received All-CAA Third Team honors after finishing the regular season with an average of 12.0 points per game. She’s been consistent, marking 21 double-digit scoring games throughout the season. In a testament to her playmaking abilities, Taylor recorded a career-high of 12 assists in two separate conference games. For a player who started all 29 regular-season games, her contributions have played a significant role in the Cougars achieving one of their best records in program history.
The excitement didn’t end with the Barbot sisters’ achievements. A slew of other accolades were also handed out during the CAA postseason awards announcement on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. Ali Zelaya from UNCW took home the title of Defensive Player of the Year, proving that defensive prowess is just as vital as scoring. The Sixth Player of the Year award went to Jayda Angel of Elon, who also captured the Rookie of the Year award, making it a monumental day for her as well.
Moreover, Shamarla King from Stony Brook was recognized with the Dean Ahlers Leadership Award, contributing to the recognition of true leaders on the court. Raven Preston from Elon made waves as the Scholar Athlete of the Year, highlighting the importance of both academics and athletics. Coach Tarrell Robinson of N.C.
