Berenyi Inc. Completes Retrofit of Symrise’s Goose Creek Facility

Goose Creek, South Carolina

Berenyi Inc., a leading South Carolina-based industrial and commercial design-build firm, has completed its construction project to retrofit the Goose Creek facility of Symrise, the global food additives and fragrance company.

Berenyi and Symrise Partnership

Berenyi Inc. took on the project following a multi-year contract awarded in 2020 by Symrise. Berenyi Inc.’s robust relationship with Symrise, and its reputation for excellence, were key considerations in the contract award. Chacy Richey, Vice President of Supply Chain Scent and Care for Symrise, North America, said, “We turned to Berenyi, a long-time Symrise partner, to take this project from concept to completion because their team mirrors our same standards of excellence.”

Project Features

The facility retrofit includes a cleanroom environment that accommodates the first fully automated filling station in North America for Symrise. The construction project was initiated in the fall of 2022, following the completion of Berenyi’s design phase.

At the new filling station, more than 14 different products are packaged in a cleanroom environment. This setting helps to ensure that only the highest quality products reach Symrise customers. The filling station has the capacity to fill 55-gallon drums, pails, and IBC containers. It is also equipped to palletize, label, and strap the finished packaged units once the filling process is complete.

The newly automated line includes two total product lines, one for 55-gallon drums and IBC containers, and another one for 25-kilogram pails. There is also room for future expansion, allowing for the addition of another drum filling line.

High Production Capacity

The new fully automated filling line boasts a substantial production capacity. It is capable of packaging 40 drums per hour and up to 240 pails per hour.

Jordan Behringer, the Managing Partner of Berenyi Inc. and the Lead on the Symrise cleanroom project, commented on the successful completion of the project. “It is incredibly rewarding to have worked on a project that ensures only quality products leave the Port of Charleston for destinations across the globe,” said Behringer. “Our team is honored to have led this project, and we value the relationship we’ve built with Symrise over the years.”

Key Contributors

Several other entities contributed to the completion of the project. Berenyi’s team served as the project’s lead architect, structural engineer, and construction manager. Live Oak Consultants in North Charleston, South Carolina, was responsible for the MEP engineering. UltraPure Technologies, based in Suwanee, Georgia, designed the cleanroom environment that now houses the filling equipment.

Symrise, with its roots in the Lowcountry, is excited about the production that will be coming out of its newly retrofitted facility in Goose Creek. This project highlights Berenyi’s capacity to design and execute large-scale industrial retrofits and Symrise’s commitment to maintaining high standards in manufacturing environments.
