Sullivan’s Island Library Set for August Closure for Renovations
SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. — The popular Edgar Allen Poe/Sullivan’s Island Library, managed by the Charleston County Public Library System, is scheduled for closure starting from Saturday, August 10, at 1 p.m., it was announced this week. The process will allow for extensive renovations to occur as part of the $108.5 million referendum passed back in 2014 aimed at constructing five new libraries and improving the current ones across the county.
The renovation will involve both an exterior and interior transformation. An integral part of Sullivan’s Island’s downtown, the branch, situated at 1921 Ion Ave., will be treated to a refreshing new paint job and a replacement of the current furniture.
Alternate Arrangement and Expected Completion Time
During the renovation period, items that are placed on hold by library users will be redirected to the Mount Pleasant Library located on Mathis Ferry Road. Items can also be delivered to other libraries selected by library users when they place a hold online or over the phone with staff from other open branches. However, patrons are advised that book returns will not be available at the Sullivan’s Island Library during this overhaul.
While the exact timeline remains at a certain level of flux, the renovations are generally expected to take several months to complete to properly refurbish and upgrade the library to a more contemporary standard. Local firm Liollio Architecture is tasked with the responsibility of creating and implementing the design plans.
