Summerville was buzzing with excitement on the evening of December 15, 2024, when local law enforcement found themselves in a nail-biting chase after a man driving a stolen low-boy trailer and shipping container. It all started in the late afternoon, and the drama unfolded in a way that could make for a thrilling movie scene!
Around 5 p.m., a sharp-eyed deputy from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office spotted a tractor trailer that matched the description of one that had been reported stolen. His instincts kicked in, and he turned on his lights, signaling the driver to pull over. But instead of complying, the driver, later identified as Corbett Kenneth Wayne Mizzell, 41, from Summerville, decided to hit the gas instead!
The chase kicked off as Mizzell sped down the roads, zipping from Old Trolley to Dorchester and onto Bacons Bridge Road, zigzagging through a nearly four-mile stretch while deputies pursued him. It must have been quite the sight—vehicles rushing along, sirens blaring, and officers determined to catch the suspect!
Things took a turn during the pursuit when Mizzell attempted to make a left turn into a parking lot on Bacons Bridge Road. Unfortunately for him, the heavy trailer got snagged on the center median, causing it to rip off the cab of the truck! Now, this was a twist you wouldn’t expect to see in a suspense thriller. The truck came to a halt at 850 Bacons Bridge Road, and at that moment, it wasn’t just the officers catching their breath; the thrill of the chase somehow turned into a foot race!
Despite being in quite the predicament, Mizzell leapt out of the truck and dashed into the nearby woods. But little did he know, the deputies weren’t about to let him slip away. Their training kicked in as they quickly pursued on foot, eventually managing to apprehend him among the trees.
Following the heart-pounding chase, Mizzell was charged with receiving stolen goods, failure to stop for blue lights, and resisting arrest. His decision to run didn’t seem like the best choice when the evidence stacked against him included that stolen trailer! According to Lieutenant Chaz Easterlin from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, the trailer had indeed been reported stolen in Charleston County.
This shiny piece of equipment didn’t just end up being the focus of a wild police chase; it also served as a reminder for everyone about the importance of keeping an eye on your belongings and reporting anything suspicious.
On a lighter note, while the excitement of the chase captured the town’s attention, the weather earlier that day hadn’t been quite as thrilling. Summerville started off with some cloudy skies, which occasionally gave way to patchy fog as the day progressed. With a high of about 73°F, temperatures were comfortably mild, but the low dipped down to around 56°F come nighttime. It was a reminder for everyone to bundle up as they ventured out under the stars, just perhaps not in a stolen vehicle!
As we wrap up this incredible story, it serves as a great reminder of how our local law enforcement is on the alert and ready to protect the community. From a normal day turned chaotic, we see the importance of teamwork and vigilance in ensuring safety.
If you spot something amiss, don’t hesitate to report it! Keeping our neighborhoods safe is a team effort, and who knows—you might just prevent the next wild chase right here in Summerville!
