North Charleston, S.C. – In a delightful twist on election season traditions, South Carolina is introducing its own furry oracle to the political stage. As the nation prepares for the 2024 presidential election, a squirrel named Gnocchi Jr. has made his own prediction, mirroring his predecessor’s adorable ballot in previous years.
On a breezy Friday in October, Gnocchi Jr. was presented with two bowls, each labeled with the names of the presidential candidates: “Harris” and “Trump.” Each bowl was filled with an equal number of tasty treats—specifically, hazelnuts and brazil nuts. The idea was pretty straightforward: whichever bowl the little critter devoured the most from would signify his pick for the upcoming election.
After a focused 30-minute snacking session, the results were in! The over-caffeinated critter polished off an impressive seven nuts from the Harris bowl and only three from the Trump bowl, signaling that Gnocchi Jr. believes Vice President Kamala Harris will take the win in November.
Serena Ash, Gnocchi Jr.’s caregiver and the mastermind behind this quirky election tradition, shared that this is not the first time a squirrel has had a say in presidential picks. The tradition began back in 2008 with Gnocchi Sr., who cast his vote in a similarly playful fashion.
“The election of 2008 was getting ready to happen, and we decided to let him vote for the president, and that’s how the story began,” Ash explained, recalling the fun and quirky inception of this unconventional voting method.
According to Ash, squirrels are not just cute little creatures, but they also display surprising intelligence. She observed, “They’re very wise, very sneaky and that sneakiness leads them to be able to be more intelligent. They use their brain.” This gives Gnocchi Jr. a unique angle in determining the likely winner.
While Gnocchi Jr. might have had a mixed record—he picked Trump to win last time—his creator emphasizes the heartwarming goal behind the little guy’s antics. According to Ash, the whole point is to encourage people to get out and vote.
“If an animal has the instinct to be able to vote for someone, then people should have a natural instinct to be able to keep their liberties of their country and their freedom to go and vote,” she said passionately. “If an animal is doing it…people should do it too.”
With the election just around the corner, many are wondering if Gnocchi Jr.’s prediction will hold true. Will the little nut enthusiast’s choice reflect the actual outcome? There’s only one way to find out—mark your calendars for November 5, when voters across the country will head to the polls.
As the election draws near, it’s heartwarming to see such a light-hearted take on the political process. It serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of civic engagement, and who knew a little squirrel would help spark that motivation? Here’s to hoping that Gnocchi Jr.’s instincts lead to a thrilling outcome!
