The Spoleto Festival USA has kicked off excitement for its upcoming 2025 season, revealing a stunning lineup filled with over 120 performances spread across 17 exhilarating days. It’s all happening from May 23 to June 8, 2025, and trust us, you won’t want to miss it!
The moment many have been waiting for has finally arrived! Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on February 21, 2025, so make sure you’re ready to grab your seats for an unforgettable experience. It’s wise to act fast, as these tickets are sure to be in high demand!
This year, attendees can look forward to an array of incredible acts. The festival will present two operas, sensational multimedia offerings, a special cabaret event, and numerous concerts that will tickle your musical fancy. One of the standout events will be the cabaret performance by cultural icon Isaac Mizrahi, who promises to blend comedy, performance art, and music at the Charleston Music Hall.
Prepare for some big names gracing the stage! The festival will feature performances by talented saxophonist Branford Marsalis and legendary singers including Patti Smith, Mavis Staples, and Lucinda Williams. Don’t forget about the indie rock band Band of Horses and Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, who will surely draw in crowds. Each performance is set to be something truly special!
One of the festival’s key highlights includes renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who will perform her monumental artistic piece titled “Fragments.” Featuring world premieres of ‘Fragments 5’ and ‘Fragments 6’, this performance will be held at the College of Charleston’s Sottile Theatre on May 26, 28, 29, and 31.
This festival will be particularly noteworthy for its world premieres. Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” will have premiere performances at the Dock Street Theatre on May 30, June 1, 3, and 6. Meanwhile, Massenet’s “Thaïs” will also debut at the Charleston Gaillard Center on May 23 and 25. It’s a golden opportunity to see these fresh productions come to life!
Other exciting performances are in store, including Ambrose Akinmusire’s four-program jazz residency across three venues, as well as Cécile McLorin Salvant enchanting audiences with her timeless jazz ballads. And don’t miss Etienne Charles, who will showcase the rich culture of the Gullah Geechee people intertwined with his Caribbean heritage.
The festival will also present “White Box,” a U.S. premiere production unraveling a captivating story about a gas balloon that went missing in 1897, combining dance, music, and theater with stunning projections. Additionally, “The 4th Witch” will offer a creative reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” through the art of shadow puppetry.
Families can delight in several productions tailored for all ages, including “Polar Bear and Penguin” and “Mrs. Krishnan’s Party.” The festival is not just about the performances but aiming to engage the community and make the arts accessible to everyone!
Under the direction of Mena Mark Hanna, now in his fifth year, the festival is set for an incredible season that emphasizes impactful works juxtaposing the old with the new. The festival will also enhance its educational and community initiatives, thanks in part to a generous $1 million donation from M. Edward Sellers in memory of his late wife.
