In an ongoing trend of expanding its air travel routes, Spirit Airlines has initiated a nonstop flight from Charleston International Airport to Detroit. The new service is set to begin on July 10, consolidating Spirit Airlines’ commitment to meet the community’s needs with affordable, direct service to popular destinations.
Elliott Summey, the CEO and Executive Director of Charleston International Airport, expressed his pleasure on the addition of the new flight service. In his statement, Summey emphasized that the nonstop flights to Detroit, the largest city in Michigan and the birthplace of the modern automobile, would provide business and leisure travelers with more convenient options. The new route will allow Charleston’s travelers to explore a region known for its rich offerings in arts, entertainment, and outdoor activities.
Spirit Airlines made its debut at the Charleston International Airport in April 2023. On its inaugural day, the airline announced new flights from the Lowcountry to Las Vegas, a service that began in September 2023. The addition of the Detroit route is seen as an extension of the airlines’ growth and dedication to offering low fare flight options. Alongside expanding its services, Spirit has significantly contributed to the rise in the number of passengers at the Charleston International Airport.
John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, voiced his optimism for the new service. The nonstop service to Detroit is expected to make travel to the Motor City more affordable, simultaneously creating more opportunities for Detroit’s residents to explore Charleston and enjoy its rich history. The nonstop service is scheduled to be available four times a week.
The partnership between Spirit and Charleston International has proven highly successful in its first year, and this new route is a testament to Spirit’s continued confidence in the region. Helen Hill, CEO of Explore Charleston and chair of the Aviation Authority, echoed this sentiment. Hill emphasized how this increased nonstop service between Detroit and Charleston is a win-win situation. The service is a significant advantage for both Detroit residents interested in Charleston’s attributes and Charleston locals traveling to the Midwest market.
Spirit Airlines’ efforts to provide low-cost, direct routes from Charleston to prominent locations like Detroit significantly contribute to regional travel and tourism, providing easier accessibility for both residents and tourists alike. The launch of the new Detroit route exemplifies Spirit’s commitment to expanding its network and offering more travel options to its customers.
