SLED Investigates North Charleston Officer-Involved Shooting

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred following a response to a hit-and-run incident in North Charleston.

On August 10, 2024, North Charleston Police Department reported a hit-and-run accident at Big T’s gas station located on the 6900 block of Stall Road around 9:50 p.m. According to Harve Jacobs, the public information officer for the department, while officers were attending to the accident, they were alerted by customers about a “belligerent male” brandishing a gun at the front of the store.

The Incident

In response to the alert, an officer approached the man, who started waving his gun in the air. The officer ordered the man to drop his weapon. As per eyewitnesses, the man then began to aim his gun at people in the parking lot and the officer. In response, the officer discharged his weapon an unspecified number of times, striking the suspect.

Aftermath of the Shooting

Following the gunfire, the suspect was rushed to the hospital and is reported to be in critical condition. Details about the identity of the suspect and the officer involved have not been released by SLED or the police department as the investigation is ongoing.

SLED Investigation

This incident has underscored the need for continuous vigilance from law enforcement in situations that can escalate quickly. It has also served as a reminder of the risks that officers face while conducting their duties, sometimes forcing them to make split-second decisions in the interests of public safety.

SLED’s active participation in the investigation is a testament to the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating the incident and ensuring that due process is followed. Their involvement in assessing the incident will ensure an impartial evaluation, separate from the local authorities directly involved in the incident.

The current SLED investigation continues, with the hope that it will provide clear answers and help communicate the facts surrounding the incident to the public.

As is customary with officer-involved shootings, there are protocols in place requiring thorough and impartial investigations from an outside agency to ensure transparency and accountability. SLED’s investigation will serve this purpose, looking into the sequence of events leading up to the shooting, the actions of the involved officer, and any potential faults or legal implications that may arise.

Impact on Local Community

Incidents of officer-involved shootings often raise concerns amongst members of the affected community. It is essential for the results of investigations like SLED’s to be communicated clearly and promptly to the public, instilling trust in the law enforcement institutions and promoting an understanding of the challenges faced by officers on duty.

Until the conclusion of the investigation and the release of SLED’s findings, the local community, law enforcement personnel, and the parties involved await answers that will shed light on the events of August 10.

SLED continues its active investigation into this officer-involved shooting. Further information is awaited and will be communicated by HERE News Network as it becomes available.
