Charleston is buzzing with excitement as the College of Charleston proudly unveils its newly renovated Simons Center for the Arts. With this grand reopening set for September 14 from 1-4 p.m., the college is inviting everyone to explore not just the artistic talents of its students but also the stunning updates to a beloved community hub. This transformation is perfectly timed as the School of the Arts currently greets its largest incoming class of first-year students yet!
Many residents will know that the Simons Center has been a cornerstone of cultural events in Charleston for almost fifty years, hosting everything from college performances to the iconic Spoleto Festival. Originally built in 1978, the building has seen its fair share of wear and tear, especially as the college has expanded over the years. Now, after three years of construction, the center is back and better than ever!
The exterior of the building features subtle yet striking changes, moving away from its traditional stucco façade to a more vibrant array of tiles and shades that resonate with the colors found throughout the campus. This thoughtful design helps the building blend harmoniously with architectural gems like Randolph Hall and Towell Library.
Step inside, and visitors are greeted by a large, welcoming lobby that spills over with light and energy. The upgrades continue with a new stage floor and seating arrangements in both the Emmett Robinson Theatre and the Recital Hall. Perhaps the most exciting feature? A new two-story black box theater alongside cutting-edge facilities like a costume shop, scene shop, and even a dancing studio. Musicians will appreciate the newly equipped soundproof practice rooms and an updated recording studio that promises to boost the artistic talents of all students.
In the Recital Hall, flexibility is key! The adjustable curtains allow performers to transform the acoustic environment to meet their artistic needs—how cool is that? As Associate Dean Todd McNerney notes, “You can tune the hall,” giving every performance the special touch it deserves.
If you think these upgrades are merely aesthetic, think again! One of the most significant enhancements is a hidden cistern installed beneath the parking lot, designed to manage stormwater runoff effectively. This new addition will help alleviate flooding concerns while serving the community and ensuring a greener future.
The Simons Center isn’t just for students; it’s a gathering place for the entire Charleston community. As McNerney aptly put it, if athletics represent the front door, “the arts are more like the porch,”—inviting everyone, regardless of their background, to join in on the cultural dialogue happening right here in our city.
The grand reopening also marks a monumental shift within the School of the Arts. Newly appointed dean, Jayme Host, has a vision that emphasizes community engagement, partnerships, and a commitment to delivering amazing cultural experiences. She believes that the newly renovated Simons Center will undoubtedly bolster the school’s position as “the artistic heartbeat of Charleston.”
So mark your calendars! Join your neighbors on September 14 for a day filled with art, music, and the many talents that Charleston has to offer. The reopening party promises fun with food, mini-presentations showcasing diverse programs in studio art, music, theater, and dance, along with plenty of opportunities to soak in the new, vibrant atmosphere of the Simons Center.
With an exciting future ahead, the Simons Center for the Arts is ready to embrace new generations of artists, performers, and community members. Let’s celebrate this remarkable transformation together in Charleston!
