Shovels & Rope Set to Rock Charleston with Hometown Shows on October 3 and 4

Shovels & Rope Returns to Charleston for Hometown Shows

Charleston, the vibrant Holy City, is gearing up for an exciting musical treat as the beloved folk music duo Shovels & Rope, composed of husband and wife team Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, will be performing two special shows at the Music Farm on October 3 and 4. Fans of the duo can expect a night filled with high energy and rock ‘n roll vibes that will make the heart race.

Excitement in the Air

With a grin, Hearst shares her excitement with local supporters, saying, “Music Farm is a great rock ‘n roll room, and that’s kind of the vibe and the setlist we’re doing.” She assures audience members that they are planning on “making a lot of noise” during the shows. It sounds like an unforgettable experience is in store!

The shows will feature their brand new album, Something Is Working Up Above My Head, which was released just weeks ago on September 6, 2024. “We’re definitely focused on the new record. That’s where our heads are at—we’re mostly excited about playing it,” confirms Trent. He adds, “It’s our favorite record that we’ve made.” If that’s not an endorsement for their latest work, what is?

Live Music Takeover

Currently, Shovels & Rope are three-quarters of the way through a month-long performance journey, with Charleston being a highlight considering it’s their home base. The couple has built a strong connection to their locality, as they craft their music in a home studio located in their backyard—a cozy creative haven they’ve developed since 2017.

“Where we live in Charleston County, we get the rural aesthetic,” Trent mentions. “We thrive on the quiet that it brings us and seclude ourselves out there.” Living outside the hustle and bustle allows them to dive deep into their creativity, capturing the essence of their surroundings in their work.

Inspirations of the Low Country

The Low Country has provided a rich backdrop for the duo’s songwriting. Hearst reveals, “I steal stories from history, and that has often informed my angle of songwriting.” Their lyrics are deeply rooted in the stories of the region, a theme they continuously weave into their music. “We’ve always had a hard time leaving Charleston,” Trent shares, highlighting the duo’s undeniable connection to the city.

This particular album is special for fans, as it possesses a more pronounced rock sound compared to their previous works. Trent describes it as “the most rock ‘n roll record and heaviest” they’ve created. He adds, “It sounds like what we sound like live.” For those looking for music that’s rich with narrative spirit, they continue to describe themselves as folk songwriters, often creating music with characters and stories outside their personal experiences. However, this album features a fresh twist, as it’s “dressed up in leather for the most part.”

Don’t Miss Out!

For fans eager to experience this dynamic duo live, tickets for the shows on October 3 and 4 are now available. The doors to the Music Farm will open at 8 p.m., with the show kicking off at 9 p.m.. The opening act will feature Al Olender, making for an even more fantastic evening. General admission tickets are available for $35— a worthy investment for a night filled with incredible music!

Don’t miss out on the chance to see Shovels & Rope in the city that inspires their artistry. Mark your calendars, gather your friends, and get ready for a soulful night of folk-infused rock ‘n roll!
