Shovels & Rope Returns to Charleston for Hometown Shows
Charleston, the vibrant Holy City, is gearing up for an exciting musical treat as the beloved folk music duo Shovels & Rope, composed of husband and wife team Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, will be performing two special shows at the Music Farm on October 3 and 4. “Where we live in Charleston County, we get the rural aesthetic,” Trent mentions. “We thrive on the quiet that it brings us and seclude ourselves out there.” Living outside the hustle and bustle allows them to dive deep into their creativity, capturing the essence of their surroundings in their work.
Inspirations of the Low Country
The Low Country has provided a rich backdrop for the duo’s songwriting. Hearst reveals, “I steal stories from history, and that has often informed my angle of songwriting.” Their lyrics are deeply rooted in the stories of the region, a theme they continuously weave into their music. “We’ve always had a hard time leaving Charleston,” Trent shares, highlighting the duo’s undeniable connection to the city.
This particular album is special for fans, as it possesses a more pronounced rock sound compared to their previous works. Trent describes it as “the most rock ‘n roll record and heaviest” they’ve created.
