Charleston is buzzing with anticipation as local businesses prepare to host the “Second Thursday” event on Spring Street, kicking off this evening, October 10! From 5 PM until closing, 14 vibrant shops will unlock their doors for an evening of drinks, snacks, and special deals. You definitely don’t want to miss the fun!
The idea behind this event is simple yet impactful. It’s all about giving locals and visitors alike the chance to discover some of the amazing small businesses that sometimes go unnoticed. As Amy Driggers, owner of the chic handbag store, Taxidermy, put it, “This is a great opportunity for us to stay open later and welcome people who haven’t been able to shop our street during normal business hours.”
Each participating shop is preparing for a special evening full of unique offerings. For instance, Taxidermy will be serving up complimentary bubbles at their store located at 84 Spring Street. Meanwhile, The Paper Canopy, a delightful local gift shop at 93 Spring, is getting in on the action with tasty sangria and a special gift with every purchase made during the event.
And that’s not all! Charleston Candle Co. will be hosting a fun candle-making class, giving you the chance to get crafty while shopping. If you’re looking for a way to give back while you shop, The Tiny Tassel will donate 15% of each sale to Charleston Legal Access, a nonprofit providing affordable legal services in North Charleston. This is a great way to have fun and help out your community at the same time!
Other adorable shops joining the festivities include Bobbles & Lace, Continuum Skateshop, Goldbug Collection, Hermosa Jewelry, Mess Hall Truck Shop, MOLA Piercing and Fine Jewelry, Philosophers & Fools, Pinot & Provisions, Rooted in Charleston, and The Veggie Bin. It’s shaping up to be a real treat for shoppers who love exploring local vibes!
According to Driggers, excitement has already surpassed last month’s turnout. “We definitely got a lot more foot traffic in since the first event,” she shared, highlighting that there’s already a buzz surrounding tonight’s second round of festivities. It’s clear that community members are eager to support their local businesses and enjoy a lively evening on the town.
This isn’t Charleston’s first foray into evening shopping events. The city introduced “Second Sunday” back in 2010, promoting sidewalk shopping by closing part of King Street to cars for an entire day. These initiatives aim to not only support local retailers but also create a vibrant and inviting atmosphere for people to relax and enjoy themselves.
If you can’t make it out tonight, don’t worry! “Second Thursdays” will continue each month, with upcoming events scheduled for November 7 and December 12. Each event promises fresh experiences and local flavor, so save the dates and come hungry for both snacks and shopping!
The weather should be pleasant for this evening’s outing, with partly cloudy skies and a high of 73°F. Just a heads up, there might be a slight breeze with winds coming from the northeast at 20 to 30 mph, so hold onto your hats while you enjoy the evening festivities! It looks like fall is just around the corner, with a low of 52°F later tonight under clear skies.
So grab your friends, head down to Spring Street, and let’s support our local businesses while having a fantastic time together!
