SC Aquarium brings Educational Opportunities to Learners across the State

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The famous South Carolina (SC) Aquarium is not just a showcase for thousands of mesmerizing aquatic species, but also a major player in promoting wildlife education throughout the Palmetto State. Unknown to many, selected animals from the aquarium travel across the state for the purpose of wildlife education, catering to a diverse audience ranging from preschoolers to retirees.

SC Aquarium Education Outreach Programs

The SC Aquarium Education Outreach Programs aim to deliver STEM curriculum-based education to classrooms, libraries, and events across South Carolina. Last year, these outreach programs were successful in serving 12,888 individuals. The engagement does not end with students and children. The aquarium ensures it has something to offer to people of all age groups.

The attendees of these programs have the unique opportunity to engage in hands-on interaction with creatures like sea stars, urchins, hermit crabs, snakes, and turtles, all woven into a seamless science lesson. The primary goal of these programs is to extend education beyond the confines of the aquarium walls.

Aiming for Enduring Impact

Jaime Thom, the Senior Manager of School Programs for the SC Aquarium shared her enthusiasm for the educative objectives. “We would love for students and everyone participating in our programs to cultivate a love for the environment and for ecosystems all over the world, and hopefully maybe come back to visit us here at the SC Aquarium,” she expressed.

Summers see the program’s schedule entirely booked, with a few dates even hosting dual events. The team gears up to continue spreading wildlife and water education across the state, admirably aided by a recent empowerment.

A Boost for the Cause

To celebrate June’s World Ocean Month, Mercedes-Benz Vans of Charleston generously donated an eSprinter van to the SC Aquarium. This gift will facilitate the aquarium’s team to comfortably transport the animals long distances for their respective educational outreach programs.

Thom expressed her profound joy about being an integral part of this process that promotes wildlife and water education across the state. “I love it. I’ve been here a long time. Every day is different… The variety of students and people I get to interact with is my favorite part,” she remarked.

The SC Aquarium’s Education Outreach Program will have openings beginning in August. Those interested can visit the aquarium’s website for more information and to submit an inquiry. The propagation of practical science education intertwined with the beauty of native wildlife and water continues throughout the state, driven by the passionate team at SC Aquarium.
