The legal landscape has seen a significant shift with the recent expansion of Sargent Law, P.C., known for its strong foothold within the defense litigation arena. This boutique law firm has welcomed two formidable legal professionals into its ranks: Matthew Harper, a senior attorney, and Clinton Smith, a skilled attorney. Their arrival is anticipated to elevate the firm’s capacity to handle complex cases across several sectors.
Firm founder David Sargent emphasized that Harper and Smith bring a wealth of experience to the team, which is invaluable in today’s multifaceted legal environment. With nearly two decades in litigation, Harper specializes in intellectual property disputes, catastrophic personal injury defense, and commercial litigation. His engineering background positions him uniquely among his peers, as it allows clients to benefit from a solid technical understanding, which could be crucial in high-stakes legal battles.
On the other hand, attorney Clinton Smith parallels Harper’s technical expertise. Trained as a mechanical engineer, Smith has accumulated substantial experience on major transportation and infrastructure projects. His adaptability is highlighted by his ability to navigate through intricate technical cases with precision. Together, their engineering backgrounds could be a game-changer when approaching complex litigation scenarios.

The firm has accrued a remarkable combined experience of over 100 years in trial litigation, specializing in various legal areas such as transportation, personal injury, general liability, workplace injury, and commercial litigation. Recently, it was recognized as a 2025 Best Law Firm by The Best Lawyers in America for its exceptional performance in personal injury litigation defense.
In a completely different corner of the legal world, a startling incident has emerged involving Sgt. Arturo Martinez of the Dallas Police Department, who has been placed on administrative leave due to a controversial social media post that read “aim better.” This ill-timed comment came in the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The chaotic event ended tragically with the death of former fire chief Corey Comperatore, while Trump and two spectators were injured. Sgt. Martinez, who has been a part of the Dallas Police Department since 2010, serves in the robbery unit and acts as the secretary for the Dallas National Latino Law Enforcement Organization. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia expressed dissatisfaction with Martinez’s comments, branding them as inappropriate for someone in his position.
The FBI is probing the shooting as a potential act of domestic terrorism. Notably, the shooter, identified as Crooks, was killed by Secret Service agents amidst the chaos. Martinez’s attorney has explained that his post was intended as a private citizen and did not convey the appropriate context.
Martinez only recently took a stand against injustices by organizing a “Blue for Black Lives Matter” demonstration following the death of George Floyd. This incident raises critical questions concerning decorum within law enforcement ranks, especially regarding social media behavior, as several officers have faced repercussions for similar infractions in the past.
The assassination attempt occurred mere minutes into Trump’s speech, with the perpetrator allegedly firing from an elevated position. While Trump sustained minor injuries, a grazed ear, he was swiftly removed to safety by his protective detail. The congressional representatives present reported varying degrees of injury among the attendees, though some were characterized as less severe.
As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on uncovering motives behind Crooks’ actions, yet substantial leads remain elusive. Following the shooting, President Biden condemned the violence and ordered an independent review of security measures during such high-profile events, highlighting the ongoing concern surrounding safety and security in a politically charged climate.
