City Announces Revised Garbage Pickup Schedule Following Tropical Storm Debby

Following the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby, officials of the City of Charleston have announced crucial updates concerning the city’s garbage collection schedule. The heavy rain brought about by the storm resulted in difficult conditions at the Berkeley County landfill, thereby compelling the city to initiate immediate changes to its trash and recycling schedules. The adjustment comes in an effort to facilitate cleanup operations throughout the city.

Impact on Landfill Operations

Tropical Storm Debby’s vast volumes of rain saturated the landfill area, making it practically inaccessible for vehicles to discard trash. Charleston Deputy Director Public Service, Matt Alltop, explained that the waterlogged conditions at the landfill have created a predicament for the city since there is no other location to unload the waste.

Such difficult conditions at the landfill have not only made it impossible for the county’s garbage vehicles to reach the area but also created unsafe conditions for the workers on-site. Alltop added, “When you’re out at the landfill, you sink before you get a chance to get up the hill. It’s nobody’s fault; It’s just part of living in the Lowcountry.”

Revised Trash Collection Schedule

In light of this, garbage and yard waste pickup remains suspended until Aug. 12. However, to ensure that this does not disrupt the residents too much, the city has provided a revised schedule for the rest of the week, dividing it into areas.

Details of the Revised Schedule:

Inner West Ashley, Peninsula, and James Island:
– Tuesday’s garbage collection is canceled. Service will resume Aug. 11.
– Wednesday routes will be collected Aug. 9.
– Thursday routes will be collected Aug. 10.

Outer West Ashley and Johns Island:
– Tuesday’s collection is canceled. Service will resume Aug. 13.
– Wednesday routes are canceled and will resume Aug. 14.
– Thursday routes will be collected Aug. 9.
– Friday routes will be collected Aug. 10.

Daniel Island:
– Tuesday’s routes will be collected Aug. 9.

Recycling:
– Tuesday routes will be collected Aug. 10
– Wednesday or Thursday routes will resume on Aug. 21 and Aug. 22

Residents with excess material to discard can use one of Charleston County’s many recycling drop sites. People are encouraged to visit recycle.charlestoncounty.org for site locations.

City Apologizes for Any Inconvenience

The City of Charleston acknowledges the inconvenience these changes might have caused residents and appreciates their understanding during this time. City officials are prepared to resume regular services as soon as possible and continue to closely collaborate with Berkeley County to address the conditions that are affecting their schedule.

For any queries or issues relating to the revised schedule, residents are encouraged to contact the Citizen Services Desk at 843-724-7311 or visit the city’s official website.
