Keeping Our Rails Safe: A Community Responsibility in Charleston
Charleston is bustling with life, and if there’s one thing that keeps this vibrant city moving forward, it’s our railroads. They don’t just haul freight; they transport the very pulse of our economy, connecting communities and ensuring our supply chain remains robust. South Carolina, with its extensive rail network, is no exception, and it plays a crucial role in supporting approximately 339,700 jobs while generating an impressive $56.8 billion in economic output. This isn’t just about moving goods; it’s about sustaining livelihoods and keeping local businesses thriving.
The Heart of Our Economy
Across our beautiful state, there are around 2,300 miles of railway tracks running from the majestic mountains in the west to the stunning coastline in the east. These tracks are truly the arteries of commerce! But here’s the catch: with an industry as vital as this, we have a duty to prioritize the safety and welfare of both rail workers and the communities around them.
As the union president of Local 61 right here in Charleston, I can’t stress enough how important safety is for us. For the dedicated men and women who work these rails, safety isn’t just a slogan—it’s a way of life. And for everyone living near the trains, understanding the risks associated with railroads can help prevent accidents and save lives.
Understanding the Risks
South Carolina boasts a strong rail system comprised of two major Class I railroads and multiple short lines that help power our local economies. But with the advantages comes the reality that railroads can also be dangerous. The statistics are sobering, folks. In the U.S., a person or vehicle is struck by a train every three hours, and most of these tragedies could have been avoided. That’s why we need to talk about safety every single day.
Empowering Change Through Collaboration
For more than five decades, Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI) has been dedicated to promoting rail safety. Their efforts have led to an impressive 82% decrease in collisions at rail crossings since their inception! For rail workers, there has been a stunning 71% drop in on-duty fatalities since the year 2000, with 2023 marking a record low. While that’s fantastic progress, it’s essential to remember that there’s always room for improvement.
Local Railroads Taking Action
Major rail companies like CSX are actively participating in these safety initiatives. Beyond their partnership with OLI, CSX has established itself in the community by working closely with local law enforcement, first responders, and schools to raise awareness about rail safety. They’ve even implemented a “culture of safety” that includes a mentor program pairing new hires with experienced workers.
Norfolk Southern, another key player in our area, invests around $1 billion annually in infrastructure maintenance, crucial for ensuring rail safety. They’re also embracing technological advancements with innovations like digital train inspection systems. Talk about keeping our rails top-notch!
A Team Effort for Success
Despite these efforts, we must remember that safety is a collective responsibility. For union members, robust training and strict protocols are vital in protecting our team. And for the public? It’s all about being vigilant and making wise decisions when encountering tracks. Did you know that over 60% of collisions happen at crossings with warning signals? This shows just how important it is to stay alert when crossing train tracks.
A Year-Round Commitment to Safety
Rail safety isn’t just a seasonal concern; it’s a year-round commitment. It’s truly about making sure we’re all informed and ready to do our part. Whether you’re driving, walking, or biking near the tracks, let’s prioritize safety in everything we do. Remember the phrase, “See Tracks? Think Train!” This slogan serves as an important reminder to pause, think, and practice safe habits around railroads. Slow down, look both ways, and heed the signage—after all, no shortcut is worth risking your life.
Together for a Safer Charleston
In Charleston, we celebrate our railroads and the vital role they play in our lives. But we must also acknowledge the responsibilities that come with it. Let’s work together—a community united in making our railways safer for everyone. Safety is our top priority, and it begins with each one of us!
