Protest against arms exports

Charleston Local Residents Rally Against Weapon Sales to Israel

In a public demonstration held on Saturday afternoon in Charleston County, S.C., local residents joined forces to voice their objections to ongoing weapon sales to Israel. The protest centred outside the operational base of Elbit Systems, a weapons manufacturing firm that specializes in advanced defence and homeland security solutions.

The Party of Socialism and Liberation Leads the Protest Effort

The Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL) orchestrated the protest and received cooperation from other associated groups like the Free Palestine Charleston organization for the event. Participants of the protest are concerned that local resources, including tax dollars, are being leveraged to support and facilitate what they perceive as acts of genocide.

Community Voices Demand a Say in International Matters

Rose Hassouneh, an active member of PSL, underlined the rationale behind the demonstration. She said, “We want to show that here in South Carolina our voices matter. We are in solidarity with other workers, such as those at El I, workers at the Port, who see their labour indirectly contributing to international conflict.”

“We want to show here locally that we all have a voice and that we deserve a say in transnational matters that have far-reaching humanitarian impact. Regardless of whether the number of protesters is small or large, we have a right in what’s going on.” Hassouneh shared.

The “People’s Red Line Tour”

This protest is part of the group’s series of demonstrations under the banner of “People’s Red Line Tour.” While the group is yet to disclose their plans for subsequent protests, there is an expectation that another will occur before the end of the month.

Elbit Systems Remains Unavailable For Comment

Despite numerous avenues of contact being pursued, Elbit Systems has not responded to media queries or offered any public comment about the protest. This has contributed to an ongoing discussion about the role of businesses in transnational dealings and how their actions contribute to international conflict.

The collective sentiment displayed by the Charleston locals underscores the growing consciousness and opposition to practices that may be contrary to human rights. Moreover, their demands to have a say symbolize their awakening determination to influence international policy through local actions effectively.
