NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Local group Free Palestine Charleston is planning a demonstration outside the Elbit Systems of America’s facility in North Charleston on Saturday. The protest is a response to the company’s manufacturing of weapons, including the production of equipment for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), amidst the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Israel’s Elbit Systems is one of the country’s three largest defense manufacturers. According to the company’s website, they are involved in the production of a wide variety of military hardware and supplies. Among these products are Mission Command Platforms for the US Army and the Sigma mobile cannon artillery system used by the IDF. The company’s involvement in the volatile Middle East scenario has garnered worldwide attention, and subsequently, criticism.
In their announcement of the planned protest, Free Palestine Charleston made clear their position on the matter. The group took to Instagram, posting, “Elbit Systems is one of [the] three largest defense companies in Israel profiting off the murder of tens of thousands of Palestinians.” Their post did not stop at accusations; it also delivered a demand to the Israeli defense manufacturer to “stop making weapons for genocide”.
The primary objective of this protest, according to the activist group, is to effectuate an arms embargo and put a stop to US military aid to Israel. They are standing steadfast in their belief that change is necessary and achievable.
Scheduled to commence at noon on Saturday, the protest’s location is set outside Elbit Systems’ Palmetto Commerce Park facility in North Charleston. This action is part of a larger movement arising in response to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly those involving Israel and Palestine.
As tensions continue to rise on a global stage, vocal calls for change are becoming increasingly frequent and fervent. There is a multitude of perspectives surrounding these complex matters, and this protest is yet one more example of the international conversation surrounding Middle East conflict and its consequences.
This upcoming event will add to the growing list of global actions taking place in response to the ongoing Middle East conflicts. It remains to be seen how the protest will impact Elbit Systems’ operations, if at all. Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain: the worldwide dialogue surrounding this issue will persist, propelled by the unwavering determination of activist groups like Free Palestine Charleston.
