Hip Hop legend Project Pat has announced a headlining performance at the Back 2 School Benefit show, scheduled to take place from 6 to 10 p.m. on July 27 at North Charleston’s Purple Buffalo. An initiative organized by Charleston Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Adesso Entertainment, the benefit concert aims to raise funds for the provision of school supplies for students.
This will be the fifth consecutive year that BLM has hosted the Back 2 School drive. However, this is the first occasion where a concert has been incorporated into the charitable event. Speaking on the past success of the drive, BLM group leader Marcus McDonald stated that the past years’ drives have raised funds ranging from $3,000 to $5,000. These funds were utilized to provide school supplies for students hailing from historically Black communities such as Eastside located in downtown.
The upcoming event promises to be a thrilling night with live music performances, visual arts, vendors, and a variety of foods including BBQ, soul food, and vegan meals. The star of the show will be a live performance by Project Pat, a renowned member of the hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia.
Speaking of the event, McDonald expressed his excitement, saying, “We are incredibly excited to bring together the community for an evening of music, art, and education. The event not only supports a great cause but also highlights the vibrant culture and unity within our community. We’re especially honored to have Project Pat bringing his legendary talent to support our mission.”
Apart from Project Pat, the event will witness performances from local acts such as Semkari, Kweena, Crucial BGR, Laylow Lee, King Cutler, and Dufflebagg Dougie. DJ Norway and DJ Scrib will ensure a memorable atmosphere throughout the event.
Vendors like Demetrius Bing will present visual arts for the audience. Food lovers can look out for vegan meals from Vibrant Alkaline Vegan Meals and Scott’s Grand, soul food offerings from Keoni’s, and more. Carolinaz Smoke Box & Grill and Futnuss will also be joining the food fest. The League of Women Voters will have a table at the event.
McDonald noted,” It’s a really eclectic list of different artists from different age ranges and styles, but all hip hop. This lineup is very representative of the South and our community.”
Tickets for the event start from $30 and are available for purchase on Eventbrite or at the door. All proceeds from the event will be directed towards funding the Back 2 School Giveaway to ensure that students have everything they need for a successful academic year.
