Stratford High School principal arrested on domestic violence charges, jail records show

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The Stratford High School principal was arrested Friday on domestic violence charges, Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center online records show. Jayma Diaz, 40, was booked and faces a second-degree domestic violence charge, jail records show. According to jail records, Diaz was booked at 1:25 a.m. and released at 1:59 p.m. Her bond was set at $10,000, according to jail records.

Diaz was arrested by the Charleston Police Department. “District leadership is aware of the recent employee arrest,” said Katie Turner, the chief communications officer for Berkeley County School District. “We are reviewing the incident and will follow district policy and procedure to address the matter.” News 4 reached out to the Charleston Police Department to learn details of the arrest and is awaiting a response.

Accolades and Role

Diaz was named Berkeley County School District Assitant Principal of the Year for the 2020 to 2021 school year. She was named Stratford High School’s principal in June 2021. According to the Berkeley County School District website, Diaz believes “being authentic, modeling core values and humility and establishing positive relationships are key components to being an effective leader.”

Personal Statement

At the time of Diaz being named the principal, she said she was “honored” having been selected for the role. “Having the opportunity to serve our students, teachers, staff, and community in my new leadership role is a dream come true!” she wrote on the Berkeley County School District website.
