Presidential Showdown in South Carolina Scheduled for Saturday

The Republican Party’s GOP presidential showdown is set to take place in South Carolina on the upcoming Saturday. The key contenders are the former Governor Nikki Haley and former President Donald Trump. Haley is currently positioning herself as an underdog going against President Trump, who holds a 2-1 lead according to state polls.

Early voting paused for the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday, but it is set to resume on Tuesday and will continue through to Thursday. Over the weekend, former Governor Haley rallied supporters on Kiawah Island, focusing her criticism on Trump’s concentration on his personal agenda rather than the issues the voters are concerned about.

Haley accused the former president of making “bone-chilling” comments about European allies in NATO and claimed that the Congress isn’t being honest with the public about the situation at the border, and on foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel. The ex-governor made these remarks on a nationally televised interview this Sunday.

Trump Faces Major Friday Fraud Ruling

Former President Trump faced a substantial $355 million fine in a major fraud ruling that was announced this Friday. The former president spent the weekend promoting his $400 gold sneakers and expressing discontent with the hefty fine levied against him.

Support from S.C. Senator

U.S. Senator, Tim Scott, R-S.C., came out in defense of Trump’s recent criticisms of Haley, but declined to discuss his stance on whether he would have certified the 2020 election had he been in the position of Vice President at the time.

Rankings of Presidents

The latest polls on the nation’s preference ranks President Joe Biden as the 14th best president and former President Trump as the least favorable. With the presidential showdown looming this week, Trump scheduled appearances in Greenville on Wednesday and Rock Hill on Friday. Haley, on the other hand, will proceed with her statewide bus tour.

Other Headlines

In other news, local bar owners in South Carolina are grappling with surging liquor liability insurance costs. Over the weekend, a fatal shooting at Wadmalaw, South Carolina, claimed one life.

Data shows a steady increase in state gas prices over the last four weeks, averaging at $2.99 per gallon. Meanwhile, Kiawah Partners have put forward an offer to sell Captain Sams Spit – a piece of land that has been the subject of a long-standing dispute and includes a county park – to the state for $40 million.

Furthermore, Charleston City has identified 8,000 storm drains that can serve as stewardship opportunities, and a privately-funded park in downtown Charleston is poised to become a public haven.
