Charleston Welcomes a Flavorful Pop-Up: Hummus

Hey there, food lovers of Charleston! If you’re looking for a delicious dining experience this fall, we have some exciting news from the culinary scene. There’s a brand-new pop-up restaurant in town that’s already creating quite a buzz, and it’s called Hummus. You heard that right! This pop-up offers a delightful assortment of Lebanese dishes right here in the heart of the city.

A Taste of Lebanon

Hummus made its grand debut at 334 East Bay St. in September, taking over the space of the popular sushi restaurant, Shiki, every Sunday and Monday when Shiki is closed. The mastermind behind this flavorful venture is Bashir Boumjahed, a talented chef whose roots in Lebanon bring authenticity to every dish. Bashir’s recipes are age-old family traditions but are presented with a modern twist that appeals to today’s diners. His partner, Madelyn Young, is equally excited about the pop-up, and together they hope to turn Hummus into a permanent fixture of Charleston’s vibrant food landscape.

What’s on the Menu?

Now let’s talk about the real star of this show—the food! At Hummus, you’ll find an array of enticing options that are sure to tantalize your taste buds. What’s on the menu, you ask? How about some crispy falafel, marinated chicken shawarma, and juicy shish kafta? It doesn’t stop there—the za’atar-spiced french fries are a must-try, adding a hint of spice to every crispy bite.

One standout dish that you can’t afford to miss is the halloumi salad, where golden-breaded halloumi cheese sits beautifully atop a bed of dressed arugula and fresh strawberries. And if you’re in the mood for something smoky, the baba ghanoush, garnished with pomegranate seeds, is a family specialty that Bashir treasures deeply—he learned this dish from his great-grandmother.

Experience Lebanese Dining Like Never Before

What sets Hummus apart is not just the flavors but also the presentation. Each dish has a refined touch that reflects Lebanese traditions while being approachable for everyone. Did we mention the garlicky toum? This intense garlic dip pairs beautifully with the marinated chicken, making it a delightful complement to the meal.

Upcoming Changes and Special Hours

Mark your calendars, because from October 20 through November 4, Hummus will take over Shiki fully while the sushi restaurant enjoys a well-deserved fall break! During this period, you’ll be able to enjoy the Lebanese cuisine daily from noon to 10 p.m. It’s a perfect opportunity to bring your friends and family to explore the tastes of Lebanon.

Follow Along

If you want to stay updated with all the delicious happenings at Hummus, be sure to follow them on Instagram at @hummus.charleston. As Bashir says, “It’s like a dream come true,” and we can totally see why! The promise of delectable dishes rooted in authentic Lebanese flavors is something you won’t want to miss out on.

So whether you’re digging into some falafel with friends or enjoying a heartwarming shawarma, Hummus is sure to provide a delightful dining experience for everyone. Happy eating, Charleston!
