Charleston, S.C. is buzzing with excitement as the Palmetto City Ballet returns to the stage this holiday season, breathing new life into the beloved Christmas classic, The Nutcracker. This year’s production features a charming Lowcountry twist that is sure to warm hearts and spread holiday cheer.
In this enchanting rendition, we meet Clara, a sweet Lowcountry orphan who dreams of finding a loving family just in time for Christmas. Unlike the traditional version of The Nutcracker, which takes audiences to the land of sweets, this adaptation invites you to explore an old Victorian Charleston marketplace.
Jillian Kerr, who takes on the role of Clara, described her journey through this version as “filled with menacing shadows, dancing snowflakes, and a toymaker who presents her with a Nutcracker.” She expressed her enthusiasm to share a story that resonates with the local community, weaving in familiar elements of the beloved city.
Sarah Walborn, dancing the role of the character Christmas Star, mentioned that the unique Lowcountry influence allows dancers to develop their characters more deeply. “We hope that our audience gets to connect with a really heartfelt Charleston story,” she shared. This version of the classic allows for relatable and engaging storytelling that pulls in the audience like never before.
Walborn also underlined the inspiration drawn from Charleston’s rich history to enhance the narrative. “We hope that they get to see the inspiration from Charleston’s history that we put into our storytelling,” she said.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this production is the involvement of local children. The ballet opens its arms wide, letting hundreds of young dancers share the stage with the professional ballerinas. “It is really special to see their little hopes and dreams come alive on the big stage at the Sottile Theater,” Walborn shared, highlighting the joy and excitement that unfolds when community members can take part in this time-honored tradition.
At its core, the Palmetto City Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker is a touching reminder that family is the most precious gift of all. “The love of family is a really important construct and that’s really special during the holiday season,” noted Kerr. This approach pulls on the heartstrings, crafting a performance that is more personal than ever.
After a successful debut in 2022, audiences will be thrilled to know that this enchanting production is gracing the stage once again with four performances set to light up the Sottile Theater. Mark your calendars for December 20 through December 22, 2024, and prepare yourself for a charming evening filled with talent, love, and the spirit of Charleston.
