Over 60 Individuals Honored at Joint Base Charleston for Participation in Operation Allies Refuge
On Thursday, a remarkable ceremony was held at Joint Base Charleston, rewarding over 60 individuals with prestigious medals for their critical role in Operation Allies Refuge (OAR). The celebrated participants were mainly the U.S. military personnel, including 64 airmen, who executed imperative missions during OAR in 2021. Their crucial role involved ensuring the safe evacuation of U.S. citizens, Special Immigrant Visa applicants, and vulnerable Afghan nations from Kabul, Afghanistan.
The Unyielding Determination of the U.S. Military
Addressing the honored participants, retired U.S. Air Force Col. Paul Eberhart remarked on the steadfast dedication of the servicemen and servicewomen. He noted, “No matter what happens, you must always be prepared to answer the call when our nation needs to move people, equipment and supplies.” Eberhart highly commended the achievements of these brave individuals, expressing significant hope for the future while stressing the need to remain vigilant and prepared for unforeseen circumstances.
Invaluable Contributions of the Honored Officers
One of the noteworthy individuals, Captain Jonathan Wuerzburger, piloted a C-17 Globemaster III and significantly contributed to ensuring the safety of crew members and passengers at Hamid Karzai Airfield during the Afghanistan evacuation. Speaking about the recognition, Wuerzburger underscored that it was a collective effort of every individual and unit involved, including the families back home. He expressed his appreciation, stating, “It wasn’t just one individual, unit, or career field. It was the combined efforts of everyone involved, including the families back home who carried the weight of their loved ones being gone and the uncertainty of their safety while this operation was conducted.”
Medals Awarded at the Ceremony
The honorable ceremony recognized the commendable achievements of the individuals through the presentation of various military decorations, which included:
- A Distinguished Flying Cross – awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight.
- Thirty Air Medals with C-Device – recognizing meritorious achievement in aerial flight under combat conditions.
- Seven Air Medals – bestowed for distinguished service in flight.
- Fifteen Meritorious Service Medals – bestowed for non-combat outstanding service or achievement.
- An Air and Space Commendation Medal – awarded for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service.
- Ten Air and Space Achievement Medals – recognizing significant accomplishments or service.
