Charleston Teens to Experience Historical Oregon Trail at the Library

The city of Charleston County’s Public Libraries located across various branches have announced an upcoming, interactive educational program designed for teens from grade 6 to 12. Named the Oregon Trail at the Library, it aims to replicate the historical journey taken by numerous pioneers in the 19th century, while simultaneously teaching basic budgeting skills.

Going Back in Time with the Oregon Trail

This program is bringing back to life the classic game which has been popular among several generations. Participants will have to ‘cross wild rivers’, ‘find food’, and ‘evade illness’, all while maintaining a budget to ensure they don’t run out of funds before the supposed end of their journey. The focus here is on creating a real-life simulation that brings exciting historical experiences into the present day, teaching valuable lessons in an engaging way.

The program also aims at fostering teamwork, decision-making skills, and understanding of historical events as participants embark on this live-action adventure. The interactive nature of the program is structured to ensure an engaging and immersive historical learning experience.

Where and When?

The Oregon Trail at the Library will be held across multiple branches of the Charleston County Public Library. The first session will take place on Wednesday, April 10 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Dorchester Road Library. The next session will be on Tuesday, April 23 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Baxter-Patrick James Island Library. The final session will be on Monday, April 29 from 3-4 p.m. at the Dart Library.
