Man Charged with Murder of N. Charleston Sanitation Truck Driver

In recent news from North Charleston, South Carolina, a 24-year-old man has been accused of the murder of a Public Works employee. The suspect, identified as Tyrell Lamont Smith, was arrested in New York and arraigned on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Suspect Arrested

Smith was apprehended on Aug. 1 by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in New York. This announcement came from Harve Jacobs, the spokesman for North Charleston Police Department. Upon arrest, Smith was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a crime of violence. He is currently in the process of being extradited to South Carolina. A mugshot was not immediately made available to the public.

Incident Details

The charges against Smith are linked to a shooting incident on July 18 that resulted in the death of Da’twan Gatling, a 26-year-old employee of the North Charleston Public Works Department. Gatling was operating a sanitation truck in the vicinity of Bayfield Drive at the time of the incident.

Police reports suggest that the shooting caused Gatling to lose control of the sanitation vehicle which subsequently crashed into a tree on Dorchester Road, near Michaux Parkway. Gatling was rushed to the hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing, with the North Charleston Police Department working closely with state and federal law enforcement agencies.
