In North Charleston, an influential librarian has embarked on a mission to ensure that all students, especially those new to the school, feel welcome. Melissa Zahler, a reputable figure at Chicora Elementary School, uses her role as librarian to bring about a sense of inclusivity and belonging amongst all students.
The noticeable increase in students enrolling midway through the academic year led Zahler to reflect on the challenge of starting a new school under such circumstances. Acting on her observations, she launched the “All Are Welcome” project through Donors Choose, an educational crowd-funding site.
The project aims to raise just over $2,000 to purchase copies of the children’s book “All Are Welcome” in both English and Spanish. This picture book fosters an empowering message of embracing students from all walks of life and appreciating diversity in a safe and nurturing educational environment.
Additional to providing these empowering literature resources, Zahler plans to use the funds raised to distribute necessary school supplies, such as pencil pouches, notebooks, and pencils, among the newly enrolled students. Zahler believes that these simple gestures contribute significantly to making newly joined students feel seen and valuable in their new school environment.
“I hope that when the students enter this brand-new school, that when they’re given this gift of this book, that they feel invited and they feel seen and they feel important,” Zahler stated.
Anyone interested in supporting Zahler’s “All Are Welcome” project can donate through the Donors Choose platform. This ensures the transparent and accountable use of funds, as the organization directly manages the collected money, purchases requested items, and delivers them to the teacher. Contributing to this cause not only encourages inclusivity but also counts as a tax-deductible donation. Zahler’s project will be accepting donations until September 5.
