In the city of North Charleston, flags have taken on a significant role for one local business as they lean into a rich family history rooted in military service.
The founders of Allegiance Flag Supply, Katie Lyon and her husband Wes Lyon, together with their childhood friend Max Berry, decided to take matters into their own hands when the American flags they purchased for their home quickly deteriorated under South Carolina’s weather conditions. Born from an appreciation for her grandfather’s service in the navy during World War II, Katie Lyon’s deeply rooted patriotism motivated her to create a flag that was American-made and could withstand harsh weather.
Since the initiation of their business venture in their garage in 2018, they have swiftly grown. Working with a family-owned textile factory in Georgia, Allegiance celebrated its fifth business expansion in North Charleston just before Memorial Day. The company is now investing $6.3 million in a new 24,000-square-foot site, aiming to employ 144 people over the next five-year period as demand for their products increasingly gains traction.
Crafting flags from heavy nylon fabric that are double stitched to prevent unraveling, Allegiance’s commitment to an enduring American-made flag resonates with their rapidly expanding customer base. The flags are also designed to rotate to prevent tangling and are packaged in a military-style tri-fold design, showcasing the company’s ongoing dedication to its military roots.
Beyond manufacturing quality flags, Allegiance seeks to commemorate the sacrifices made by military personnel, with an uptake in sales during national holidays such as Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Customers not only buy their flags to fly outside their homes but often in memory of loved ones who sacrificed their lives in service of their country.
In addition to making flags, Allegiance collaborates with numerous nonprofits aiding veterans, first responders, and their families. Organizations such as Boot Campaign, Stop Soldier Suicide, and Folds of Honor receive donations from the company, either in the form of flags or a portion of sales.
As for the future, while the company continues to focus on their flagship product, they do not intend to stop there. Katie Lyon’s statement reflects their ambition to expand their offerings to include other American-made products such as clothes and leather goods, reassuring their customer base that “we’re not done yet; that’s for sure.”
