In sunny North Charleston, South Carolina, residents were in for quite the spectacle on Wednesday as a local man led police on multiple chases that crossed different jurisdictions, all while facing a slew of serious charges. The man at the center of this unfolding drama is 39-year-old Anthony Karron Washington, who now finds himself facing the consequences of his actions.
The series of events kicked off just after 12:30 p.m. when deputies responded to a harassment complaint at the 1700 block of Ashley River Road in West Ashley. Upon arrival, the officers met Washington, who explained that he felt he was being harassed and stalked by a technician who had worked on his home within the past year. After a chat and gathering some details, the deputies discovered that Washington was driving with a suspended license.
This was not a simple misunderstanding. Once officers informed him that he was under arrest, Washington attempted to evade them, jumping back into his vehicle and speeding off. This led to a brief chase down Ashley River Road, which ultimately ended when authorities decided it was best to call it off for safety reasons.
Fast forward about an hour later, around 1:40 p.m., police in North Charleston received an important update—a “be on the lookout” alert for the suspect from the previous incident. It didn’t take long for North Charleston Police to take action when an officer spotted Washington’s vehicle at the intersection of Azalea Drive and Bonds Avenue.
Unfortunately for the officers, Washington didn’t stop. Instead, he kicked off another wild chase! But the officers were prepared this time. They deployed stop sticks on I-526 westbound at North Rhett Avenue, successfully striking the right tires of Washington’s vehicle. Despite losing a couple of tires, he was not slowing down. The chase continued as the suspect exited onto North Rhett and made a right onto Remount Road, before heading toward Rivers Avenue.
The thrill ride came to a crashing halt when Washington’s vehicle collided with another car near Hawthorne Drive. Thankfully, the injuries from this impact were minor, but the drama didn’t stop there. A K-9 officer was hot on his trail and managed to catch Washington shortly afterward.
Now, Washington is facing a hefty list of charges, including resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer while doing so, possession of cocaine, hit and run with minor personal injury, and hit and run with property damage. He’s also in trouble for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, not to mention two counts of failure to stop when police lights were flashing.
As of Thursday afternoon, Washington was being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center, where a judge set his bond at a staggering $37,980—though he is still dealing with the two hit and run charges, which are yet to have a bond set. The situation has certainly raised eyebrows in the community and served as a reminder of the wild and unpredictable nature of events that can occur right in our backyards.
While this latest chase left many in disbelief, it’s a clear indication of the important work being done by law enforcement in keeping our streets safe. Here’s hoping North Charleston can return to its peaceful routine as authorities manage the aftermath of this eventful day!
