Hey there, Charleston! If you’ve been soaking up all that sweet Southern sunshine these last few days, you might have noticed the weather was pretty nice. Today, we were graced with a mix of sunshine and clouds, with highs soaring around 65°F. The gentle winds from the west-southwest at just about 5 to 10 mph have kept things pleasant. But don’t get too comfy, because tonight we’ll see those clouds rolling in, bringing the temperature down to a cozy 49°F. So perhaps grab that comfy blanket for a movie night!
Now, let’s dive into some exciting news from the arts scene! Singer-songwriter Manny Houston and musician Heather Rice are taking the stage at Pure Theatre with their captivating performance of “The Last Five Years.” This critically acclaimed musical is anything but ordinary as it explores the ups and downs of romance and heartbreak. If you haven’t caught them yet, you might want to grab your tickets!
And speaking of delightful performances, we have even more for you! Fans of new musicals will be thrilled to hear that the winners of this year’s Search for New Musicals international contest have been announced, and the third-place winner, “Pleasure Never Lies,” is making its world premiere right here in the Holy City! This production is set to take the stage at the Cannon Street Arts Center next year, a transformation brought to life by developer Patterson Smith.
What’s more exciting is that winners of this prestigious contest often receive awards up to $25,000 for workshops, concert readings, and support from expert critics, which helps refine their productions before they hit the stage. Elise Dewsberry, artistic director of NMI, couldn’t contain her excitement, stating, “We love seeing what writers are creating!” This is not just about awards, folks; it’s about nurturing creativity!
“Pleasure Never Lies” is sure to tug at your heartstrings and tickle your brain, as it tackles everything from the science of birds to feminism and love. The story revolves around Samantha Williams, an insecure ornithologist whose progressive views clash with her more conservative male colleagues. When she’s given a chance to host a new nature documentary, she faces a crossroads that challenges her to stand up against her boss, boyfriend, and various scientists worldwide.
The musical’s book and lyrics are the creative concoction of Marshall Hagins, and the score is crafted by none other than Brad Moranz, a Charleston native with Broadway experience. With a collaboration that spans over 40 years, you wouldn’t want to miss what they’ve cooked up right in our backyard!
Under the careful direction of Sharon Graci, the artistic director at Pure Theatre, this production aims to break ground in our vibrant arts community. Performances will kick off on April 10 and run through May 3. And guess what? Tickets are already flying off the racks! You can snag yours now at puretheatre.org or by checking out the Season 22 Flex Pass for members.
So, what are you waiting for? Join the excitement in Charleston! There’s a wave of creative energy sweeping through our town, and you won’t want to miss a moment of it!
