Delicious New Mexican Eats Pop Up in Charleston
Charleston is buzzing with excitement this December, and it’s not just because of the holiday season! A new pop-up Mexican eatery has landed in town, and it’s already turning heads (and taste buds). Chef Michael Toscano has officially opened the doors to Blanca Estrada, and it’s nothing short of a culinary treat. The restaurant took over the space of an old UPS store and has transformed it into a vibrant haven for Mexican food lovers.
The Launch of Blanca Estrada
Stepping into Blanca Estrada feels like walking into a colorful fiesta. The walls are decorated with framed art and charming knick-knacks that give it a warm, inviting vibe. Customers can often be found mingling while they wait for their orders, striking up conversations with Toscano himself. It’s a true community hangout, and the friendly atmosphere is part of what makes it special.
A Culinary Tribute
Blanca Estrada isn’t just another taco stand; it’s a heartfelt tribute to Toscano’s roots. Named after his mother and grandmother, the menu features family recipes that take diners on a flavorful journey through Mexico. These meals are crafted with love, featuring classics like tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. With family recipes and regional cooking at the center of the menu, each bite offers a taste of tradition. The handmade tortillas are even crafted at Toscano’s more established restaurant, Le Farfalle, before making their way next door to be served fresh at Blanca Estrada.
Tantalizing Tacos and More
Let’s talk about what really steals the show: the food! Customers can indulge in perfectly charred tacos brimming with flavor. For instance, the taco filled with guisado features tender, braised meat that’s just packed with spices. Not to mention the incredible cochinita pibil from the Yucatán Peninsula, which brings a perfect balance of zest and richness to the table. Topped with bright white onions and fresh cilantro, these tacos are an absolute must-try!
A Unique Experience
Blanca Estrada operates as a pop-up restaurant for now, but you can bet Toscano has big plans for the future. Currently, it welcomes hungry customers from Wednesday to Saturday, serving up lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every visit promises a delightful experience, and with a salsa bar featuring salsa verde, salsa roja, and salsa macha, you’re bound to test out all kinds of flavors with your meal!
While enjoying your food, take a moment to appreciate the charming setup. Comfy communal seating and stark black counters create a delightful contrast with the vibrant chalkboard menu, catching the eyes and appetites of anyone who walks through the door. Whether you prefer to dine in or grab your meal to-go, it’s evident that dedication to quality and flavor is a primary focus at Blanca Estrada.
Future Plans
Although it currently occupies a small space at 164 Market St., Suite D, Toscano is already dreaming big. He plans to open a pizza restaurant in the future and hopes to relocate Blanca Estrada to a more permanent site with ample space for more hungry patrons to enjoy these culinary delights. For now, though, we encourage you to swing by while it’s still a pop-up and savor the deliciousness that is Blanca Estrada.
