The Garden of Giving Food Pantry has opened in Charleston, West Virginia, aiming to alleviate food insecurity in the Kanawha County community. Operated by the Appalachian Center for Independent Living, the pantry provides essentials and fresh produce monthly. In addition to this new initiative, the Cougar Pantry at the College of Charleston supports students facing food insecurity. Manna Meal is also transitioning to a mobile operation to reach more individuals in need, demonstrating a collective effort to tackle hunger in the area.
Charleston is buzzing with excitement as a brand-new food pantry, the Garden of Giving Food Pantry, has officially opened its doors! Located at 4710 Chimney Drive, Suite C, this new venture is aimed at alleviating hunger and addressing food insecurity faced by many in the Kanawha County community. Operated by the Appalachian Center for Independent Living, this initiative has been long-awaited and is sure to have a positive impact on many lives.
The Garden of Giving Food Pantry is set to operate monthly on the third Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until supplies run out. This initiative comes at a crucial time when many families face challenges in accessing nutritious food. The pantry will offer a variety of essentials, including canned goods and fresh produce straight from raised garden beds located right outside the building. Imagine walking in and seeing plump tomatoes, vibrant green peppers, and golden squash—how fresh and inviting!
The core mission behind this pantry is to ensure that individuals seeking assistance feel respected and dignified. The aim is to create an environment where no one feels embarrassed or ashamed about needing help. It’s all about fostering a sense of community and support, which is something everyone can appreciate.
The Cougar Pantry provides various food items, including complete meals, snacks, and personal hygiene products, all at no cost to the students. Recent data reveals that a staggering 51% of College of Charleston students struggle with food insecurity, highlighting the importance of this service. Notably, LGBTQ+ students and those living on campus face even greater challenges.
Currently serving an impressive 650 to 700 individuals daily, Manna Meal provided over 218,000 meals in the past year alone. As the demand for their services has surged with a 60% increase reported in their food pantry following the reduction of federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, their mobile operation will help expand outreach significantly. They remain committed to maintaining a community dining area at the Garnet Career Center, ensuring that everyone can access nutritious meals.
