ELON, N.C. – In a historic performance, Avery Neaves led the College of Charleston to a resounding victory over Elon in the regular season finale, solidifying their dominance in the conference.
Neaves made headlines by becoming the first College of Charleston player in 17 years to hit for the cycle. His remarkable feat included a home run on the first pitch of the game, followed by a double in the fourth inning, a triple in the sixth, and a single later in the same inning. This outstanding achievement places him in elite company, as only one other Cougar has accomplished this rare feat.
Cole Mathis also had a standout performance, hitting a pair of home runs to contribute to the Cougars’ commanding victory. Mathis’ two-home run game marked his fifth career instances of achieving this milestone, showcasing his prowess at the plate.
Charleston’s strong performance extended beyond individual achievements, with the team securing a sweep of Elon in the series finale. The victory marked their fifth series sweep of the season and capped off an impressive run of winning 20 of their final 23 conference games. With a record of 39-12 and 21-5 in the CAA, the Cougars head into the conference tournament in Wilmington with momentum on their side.
On the pitching front, Connor Campbell delivered a solid performance, allowing only two hits in three shutout innings to earn the win. Daniel Brooks also contributed with two innings of work, including a pair of strikeouts to stifle Elon’s offense.
With their dominant showing in the regular season, the Cougars are set to enter the conference tournament as the team to beat. Following the seedings, Charleston will begin their quest for a championship on Thursday at 3 p.m., facing off against an opponent determined in Wednesday’s matchups.
As the College of Charleston celebrates their historic day and looks ahead to postseason play, the team’s strong performance and individual achievements have set the stage for an exciting journey in the conference tournament. With Neaves’ cycle and Mathis’ power hitting leading the way, the Cougars are poised for success as they aim to add a conference championship to their impressive season resume.
