Murdaugh Sentenced to 40 Years in Federal Prison Despite Already Serving Life Sentence

Convicted murderer and disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for stealing millions of dollars from his former clients and his law firm. Murdaugh, who is already serving a life sentence without parole for killing his wife and son, has thus become one of the top fraudsters in U.S. history.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel of Charleston reportedly imposed a harsher punishment on Murdaugh than federal agents had recommended. The federal agents had suggested a prison term ranging from 17.5 to just under 22 years. Judge Gergel apparently regarded Murdaugh’s crimes as particularly heinous, given that he had stolen from “the most needy, vulnerable people.”

Murdaugh Ordered to Pay $8.7 Million in Restitution

In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Richard Gergel ordered Murdaugh to pay $8.7 million in restitution to his victims. Last year, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to financial crimes in state court and was ordered to serve 27 years in prison on top of his life sentence.

The new federal sentence will run concurrently with his state prison term, meaning that Murdaugh will likely have to serve his entire 40-year sentence if his murder convictions are not overturned on appeal.
