Sponsor Our ArticlesEast Cooper Montessori School and other schools in Charleston County demand the addition of multipurpose rooms to support student activities. With limited space impacting sports, educational experiences, and school spirit, the community has united to highlight the essential need for these facilities. The district is facing funding challenges, with numerous schools advocating for changes, emphasizing the importance of providing adequate spaces for physical and social development. Upcoming meetings aim to discuss funding and project priorities.
Charleston, SC – Growing concerns about the lack of adequate facilities in Charleston County schools have sparked a passionate push for multipurpose rooms. Over a dozen schools, including the beloved East Cooper Montessori School, are rallying together to advocate for spaces that allow for improved physical activities, school events, and more!
It’s no secret that space is a big deal when it comes to student activities. Currently, many schools, including East Cooper Montessori, are feeling the crunch, which negatively impacts students’ day-to-day experiences. When it comes to sports, kids often find themselves playing home games in different gyms, and that can be frustrating. Not only does it affect their sense of belonging, but it also limits the overall school spirit that typically comes with home-field advantage.
The educational community is united in this cause. Teachers and families spoke at a recent Board of Trustees meeting, sharing insights and experiences. Students from East Cooper Montessori highlighted their frustrations about limited facilities, exacerbated by weather conditions that often force gym classes to be held outdoors. This certainly isn’t ideal when weather can swing from chilly to scorching in mere moments!
East Cooper Montessori has been operating for an astounding 57 years without any multipurpose room for physical activities or school events. The physical education teacher underscored how vital proper facilities are for students’ physical, social, and mental development. Without them, students might miss out on essential growth opportunities that could affect their futures.
There’s a sense of hope as Chief Operating Officer Jeff Borowy shared that a total of 13 schools in Charleston County are currently requesting such multipurpose spaces, and seven schools already have plans for funding. However, many are left in uncertain waters, without clear funding routes, considering the average estimated cost for constructing multipurpose rooms hovers around $4 million.
It’s important to note that 40% of students in the primary program are backed by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Many of these students find themselves in unsuitable learning environments, which emphasizes the need for facilities that support all aspects of their education. The community is actively reminded that every child deserves a safe and enriching space to learn and grow.
Looking ahead, there’s an upcoming District meeting on March 13 intended to further discuss these critical projects. As it stands, the only current funding opportunity is through the Phase V program, which is already inundated with unfunded projects amounting to over $470 million. This situation leaves many wondering if these much-needed multipurpose rooms will ever be prioritized.
Frierson Elementary, located on Wadmalaw Island, is also crying out for help, experiencing overcrowded cafeterias that limit their ability to host school gatherings. It’s the only public elementary school on the island and desperately needs a dedicated multipurpose space. In past community efforts, parents and residents have banded together to create petitions and form committees to advocate for a much-desired gymnatorium.
A previous work order for Frierson’s multipurpose room estimated costs at $5 million but, much like their counterparts, they remain unfunded and unprioritized by the district. While there’s talk of addressing the needs of schools seeing increased enrollment—such as Frierson—many parents feel frustrated that multipurpose room needs have not been given the attention they deserve.
As the community continues to advocate for multipurpose rooms, they emphasize the critical impact these facilities will have on children’s development and their overall involvement in the community. Creating spaces that foster physical activity, social interaction, and school spirit will only strengthen the educational experience for students across Charleston County!
