Mount Pleasant Embarks on Shrimp Dock and Processing Facility Renovations
In a bid to enhance the local shrimping industry, the town of Mount Pleasant in South Carolina has begun refurbishments on its shrimp dock and processing facility at Shem Creek. The renovation project aims to replace and upgrade the current infrastructure, improve accessibility and weather resilience, and ultimately support the shrimping fleet.
Project Details and Impact
Estimated to cost approximately $3 million, the renovation project will involve the removal and replacement of the existing pier and boardwalk. The current structure spanning the dock and shore will also be rebuilt. The project, coordinated by Project Manager Kevin Mitchell, is a clear statement of Mount Pleasant’s ongoing efforts to secure its shrimping industry’s future while acknowledging its heritage.
“The renovation of our shrimp docks and processing facility is a testament to our commitment to preserving Mount Pleasant’s shrimping legacy while ensuring modern and safe operations,” mentions Mitchell in a statement to the community.
Upgrade in Processing Facility
A significant part of the renovation includes undertaking extensive repairs and improvements to the covered processing facility. The end goal is to facilitate better operation and management systems for shrimp processing, amplifying the productivity of local shrimping operations.
Operations During Construction
Fresh shrimp and seafood sales conducted by Tarvin’s Seafood at the dock are expected to proceed uninterrupted during the construction phase. The town has made it a priority to keep local businesses running normally while the improvements are being carried out.
Expected Completion
The renovation project is expected to reach successful completion by July of the next year. The entire town, especially the local shrimping community, is eagerly looking forward to the upgrades that promise to enhance existing operations.
Mount Pleasant remains a thriving hub of shrimping, with a strong commitment to preserving the past while innovating for the future. The current renovation is a clear indication of this commitment, promising to bolster the town’s economy while retaining its rich heritage.
