Mount Pleasant Secures $3.3 Million for Shem Creek and Mathis Ferry Road Projects

The Town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, has secured $3.3 million in State funding for two important Capital Improvement Projects. These projects aim to enhance the community environment, improve infrastructure, and support local industry.

Shem Creek Sustainability Project Receives $1 Million

The first project, the Shem Creek Sustainability project, has been allocated $1 million of the total funding. This substantial investment will enable initial dredging in the area near the Town-owned public docks and working shrimp docks. This will ensure the continuation of public access, while also providing economic support for the local shrimping and fishing industry which is a crucial part of the community in Mount Pleasant.

Design and Construction of Mathis Ferry Road Project Receives $2.3 million

The remaining $2.3 million of the State funding will be invested in the design and construction of future phases of the Mathis Ferry Road portion of Mount Pleasant Way. Over the past few years, the town officials have been actively working on the design of this vital part of Mount Pleasant’s infrastructure.

Mount Pleasant Way: A Comprehensive Plan

Mount Pleasant Way is an integral part of the comprehensive town-wide multi-modal path plan which was passed in 2020. Its primary goal is to provide increased opportunities for recreation while serving as an alternative transportation route.

To enhance the existing sidewalks on Mathis Ferry Road, the Town has secured around $750,000 in Charleston County Greenbelt tax funds. These are specifically meant for the acquisition of rights of way. Alongside this, the Town annually allocates funds within the Capital Improvement Plan for the design and construction of the path. The newly secured $2.3 million funding will greatly boost these efforts and speed up the construction process of the pathway.

Previous projects under the same plan have seen successful outcomes, resulting in improved infrastructure in areas like Park West Boulevard, Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway, and Wingo Way. The town officials express optimism that the infusion of the new state funds will enable them to continue the path construction according to the original plan.

Community Impact

Both the Shem Creek Sustainability project and the Mathis Ferry Road project will have a profound impact in the Mount Pleasant community. These projects not only provide essential infrastructural enhancements but also support local industries and recreational opportunities, thereby fostering a well-rounded and sustainable community development.

Conclusion

The Town of Mount Pleasant’s efforts to improve local infrastructure and support local industries, underlined by the strategic use of the $3.3 million State funding, reflect its commitment to making the town a better place to live, work, and play. The completion of these projects is sure to contribute positively to the community’s future sustainability and prosperity.
