Mount Pleasant, a beautiful town known for its charming neighborhoods and scenic views, has some exciting news on the horizon! If you’ve ever been stuck in traffic heading towards the Port of Charleston, you’ll be happy to hear that big improvements are coming your way.
Recently, the federal government stepped up to the plate, approving a whopping $195 million for a major project that aims to upgrade the interchange at I-526 and Long Point Road. This means a new off-ramp and on-ramp are on the way for the bustling Wando Welch Terminal, which is the busiest cargo terminal at the Port of Charleston.
During this year’s annual “State of the Port” address, U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn announced the grant with a warm smile, sparking enthusiastic applause from everyone present. The total cost for this whole project is projected to be around $325 million, which is just a piece of a potentially $4 billion plan to expand I-526, also fondly known as the Mark Clark Expressway.
So, why is this project so important? Well, the S.C. Department of Transportation anticipates that traffic congestion will skyrocket by a staggering 66 percent by 2050! This will include a mix of passenger cars and about 13,000 trucks daily, all heading to and from the busy terminal. As it stands, the current interchange is simply not equipped to handle this level of traffic.
The new interchange is designed with an updated flow in mind. Trucks will exit I-526 directly onto a new off-ramp located just west of Long Point Road. From there, North Charleston-bound trucks will enjoy a convenient flyover that merges back onto the interstate, helping to ease that pesky traffic everyone has come to dread.
The state has actively sought input from residents during this process. Over 750 comments were collected during public meetings regarding the project. An impressive 57 percent of those responses were in favor, while only 3 percent voiced opposition. This kind of community involvement helps ensure that everyone gets a say in the changes that will shape their town.
Looking ahead, the S.C. Department of Transportation plans to kick off the land acquisition process this year, hoping to start construction by mid-2026. This will involve relocating more than 50 businesses and a telecommunications tower, making way for the new infrastructure.
Long Point Road currently serves as the only route to the gates of the 400-acre Wando Welch Terminal, which is responsible for a remarkable 78 percent of all container movements through the Port of Charleston. Recent challenges, like a sudden software outage that halted terminal operations for several days, have further illustrated the need for an effective traffic solution.
As plans roll forward, it’s easy to feel a sense of optimism. Traffic headaches may soon be a thing of the past, and residents can look forward to a more efficient and less congested commute.
Mount Pleasant is on its way to becoming a center of smoother transit and enhanced access, marking a positive step in the evolution of our lovely town’s infrastructure. Stay tuned for updates as this project comes to life!
