Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is buzzing with enthusiasm as the MUSC Health-Charleston Division recently welcomed Dr. Erik Summers as their new chief medical officer (CMO). In a time when healthcare dynamics are rapidly changing, having experienced leaders like Dr. Summers is more important than ever. His role will focus on clinical care delivery, ensuring that both inpatient and outpatient services run smoothly, which is an absolute necessity for maintaining high standards in patient care.
Dr. Summers isn’t just any physician stepping into a leadership role; he brings over 20 years of hands-on clinical and teaching experience to the table. He joins us from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston Salem, North Carolina, where he played a crucial role in creating the Patient Flow Operations Center and various services aimed at improving patient care. Initiatives like the orthopedic co-management service, diabetes management service, and hospitalist cardiology service reflect his commitment to innovative and collaborative practices in healthcare.
As the CMO, Dr. Summers will be responsible for optimizing resource use, improving performance, enhancing quality, and overseeing clinical operations. His vision for patient-centered care aligns perfectly with the values we cherish in our community, making his arrival a welcome development for everyone involved.
In reflecting on Dr. Summers’s arrival, Saj Joy, M.D., MBA, MS, CPE, who is the Chief Executive Officer of MUSC Health-Charleston Division, expressed excitement in welcoming him to their executive leadership team. “We are pleased to have Dr. Summers join our MUSC Health-Charleston Division executive leadership team. His background, experience, and focus on patient-centered care make him an excellent fit for this role. His collaborative approach to providing health care makes him a wonderful addition to our team,” he noted.
Dr. Summers earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at East Carolina University Health. His experience includes certifications from several reputable bodies such as the American Board of Internal Medicine and the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons. Well-respected in the medical community, Dr. Summers is also a member of the Chief Medical Officers Group Steering Committee for the Association of American Medical Colleges, emphasizing his dedication to advancing healthcare practices.
The future looks bright for healthcare in Mount Pleasant, especially with talented individuals like Dr. Summers in leadership rolls. With a slightly cloudy forecast of highs around 73°F and lows of 62°F expected for the week, let’s hope the weather mirrors the sunny outlook for our healthcare services. Of course, there’s a slight chance of a rain shower here and there, but Dr. Summers seems ready to take on any challenge that comes his way!
As Dr. Summers settles into his new position, patients and their families can feel reassured knowing that top-notch clinical care is on the horizon.
